MEETING CONCLUDED. FAVOURITE PROMINENT Brilliant sunshine pouring from summer skies favoured the concluding d- a y of the Taranaki Jockey Club s Christmas meeting at New Plymouth yesterday. Though larg>c the numbers in attendance were not as great as on tne opening day, when a big proportion or Boxing Day holiday-makers helped to swell the gathering. Totalisator returns for the day amounted to £23,264, a decrease of £6OOI as compared with the second day of the 1925 meeting. On the two days this year the sum of £53,223 passed through the machine as compared with £59,829 10s for the 1925 fixture, a total decrease of £6606 10s. The turf was firm and in good condition and excellent racing was presented. Fields were again of good proportions, and competition was keen. In the principal event, the New Plymouth Handicap, the honours were annexed from a field of nine by Air J. AI. Hickey’s Hawera trained The Lamb, by a comfortable margin from Air S. Tapp’s (Hamilton) Bright Day. The event of next importance, the Uruti Handicap, was contested by eleven candidates, the winner being the New Plymouth owned Vivo, with the Waverley gcldinf Pop Off in second place. In both of these events the result coincided with popular opinion as indicated on the totalisator, while in two others of the day’s events the favourites came home. The concluding results were as follow: URUTI HACK HANDICAP, of 200 sovs.; second horse 40 sovs. and third 20 sovs. from the stake. One mile and 110 yards. 1 VIVO: D. I. Of the eleven which faced the barrier in the Uruti Handicap, Vivo, with 618 tickets, carried 109 more than the second favourite, Pop Off, and Schorr was in next demand with 467. _ Schorr," Vivo, Pop Off, Sovena, and Quillfire was the order passing the stand, but leaving the straight Vivo asserted herself and set a merry pace till she reached the judge’s box. Along the back she showed a clean pair of heels to Schorr, Pop Off, Always, Quinsilia and Lightwood. At the half mile Schorr had lessened the gap, but was still three lengths behma the leader, while Always was handy in third berth attended by 'Pop Off, Quinsilia and Ligbtwood. The best placed five at the home turn were Vivo, Always, Schorr, Pop Off and Quinsilia. Along the last distance Pop Off came well, but could not reach Vivo, which went on to win by two and a half lengths from Pop Off, with Always a length and a half back third and the fast finishing Lady Anstruther close up fourth, followed by Closefirc, Schorr and TeKarcre. Time, 1.50.

With onlv one defection, the Inglewood Handicap field comprised eleven runners. Pelham (£581) carried most money, Gaillard (£478) being next preference. Oration (£406) was thiro. choice, and Pouma (£290) was fifth in popular fancy. Papaponga made the early running and after two furlongs was’ leading Oration, Pouma, Benzora, and Bonogne, but when the field straightened out for home, Pouma was just in front of Papaponga, Oration and Benzora. In the dash for the. post Pouma held position well and finished two lengths clear of Oration, while First Acre got up to third berth a length behind. Benzora was fourth and next came Bright Knight, Dobbin and Gaillard. Time. 1.14. YJ AREA HACK STAKES, of 150 sovs.; second horse 30 sovs. and third horse 15 sovs. from the stake. (Winner trained by C .Whale, Matamata.) Nins candidates went out for the last race of the meeting. Branson (£878), Bevis (£788) and Quillfire (£603) were the principal betting orders. Erin Go war quickest to moye and made the pace for Branson, Bevis, Modest Boy and Yaqui, this being the order until the van approached the home turn, when Bevis was challenging Erin Go Bragh, with Branson racing third, followed by Modest Boy and Quillfire. Erin Go Bragh and Bevis were together at the bend with little to spare from Branson and Modest Bov, but. the earlier leader was unable to keep the pace and in a gruelling finish Branson secured the honours by a, head from Bevis. while Erin Go Bragh was third two lengths back. Modest Boy was a good fourth. Then came Lady Estelle, The Swell and Quillfire. Time, 1.14 4-5.
