SHORTER HOURS.

IN ALL U.S. INDUSTRIES. ,' v ' y . H IMPORTANT REPORTS. WASHINGTON. Dec. 9. ? Two interesting reports on labour conditions were presented to-day. Mr. Green, successor to Mr. Gompers as President of the American Federation of Labour, addressing the Building Congress, said: “A shorter labour week is upon us, and we will see it quite generally established in all lines of industry. “Labour is advocating a five-day working week for economic and humanitarian reasons, believing it 'is practicable from the point of view of equalising production and consumption.. “The worker will be more efficient with the added rest.” The second report came from Mr. Davis, Secretary for Labour, who, in a report- to the President. Mr. Coolidge, said: “Higher wages, shorter hours and good working and living Conditions will increase production and enable America to compete in the matters of price and quality in the world’s markets. REASONS FOR PROSPERITY “Hie most significant thing, however, is that the American people hav« established their prosperity on th* foundation of their own production and demand. “Our wealth -has been created -at home. The present prosperity of t-ht American workman is not the produel of war activities nor of foreign trad« at the expense of other nations.” Mr. Davis recommended further im migration restrictions, to protect th< American workers, and proposed, -i Conciliation Service in conjunction witl the Department, of Labour for settlin' industrial disputes.
