ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

A SUDDEN DEATH. (BY TELEGRAPH—CHESS ASSOCIATION.) WHANGAREI, Dec. 27. Thomas Marvia (55), a well known fisherman and a member of the Whanigarei Eire Brigade for 20 years, expired in a launch when returning from a picnic yesterday. His family was with him at the time. Death was caused by heart failure. ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED. TAUMARUMUI, Dec. 28. The body of Thomas McKenna, who was drowned in the Wanganui River on December 6, was recovered a mile below the scene of the fatality.' At the inquest a verdict of accidentally drowned was returned.

OLD MAN FOUND DROWNED. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 28. The body of an old man was found near the water’s edge on the Sumner beach this morning. It was scantily clad and had the appearance of having been washed ashore after a short immersion. The body lias been identified as that of James Charles Hodgson, a married man, 71. years old. .He had been is hospital and had gone to'Sumner last night after discharge to recuperate. At the inquest to-day a verdict of found drowned was returned. A SWIMMER DROWNED. GREYiMOUTH, Dec. 28. David Hyndman, aged 26, single, a watersider, was drowned at 3.45 p.m. to-day in Cobden Lagoon, across which he was attempting to swim. He was wearing trousers. When nearly, across he disappeared, and- other swimmers dived without being able to .reach him. Later boats were brought, the body being recovered at 8 p.m. Deceased was known as a good swimmer, and the accident is difficult to explain.
