NORTH ISLAND ROADS.

IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. SOUTHERN TRAVELLER’S .PRAISE The excellence of the roads on the west coast of the North Island, compared with those of the South, has been commented upon by Mr. H. J. Knight, of the White Star Motors, who recently returned to Christchurch from a motor trip from Te Kuiti to Wellington, via Taranaki. "The contrast in the condition of the roads is remarkable,'’ said Mr. Knight upon his return to the south. “For about thirty miles from Te Kuiti the going i.s very bad, the road having deteriorated from its condition lust year. It is, however, practically the only bad stretch. On reaching Awakino Valley the road is in splendid order. The new bridge over the Mokau is well advanced, the last of the piers having been put in. As the framework is entirely of steel, a- good deal of which is in place, it should not be many months now before traffic will be able to go oxer the bridge instead of having to use the ferry punt.” Two years ago, continued Ml. Knight, the road from Mokau to New Plymouth was probably among the worst stretches in New Zealand. It was now one of the best. There were extensive stretches of tar-sealed road, the surface and grading of which was splendid. The tar-sealed thoroughfares round New Plymouth needed no praise, for their excellence was well known.
