A Frenchman, H. Stem, was arrested aboard the steamer Ellora and charged with attempting to murder .Miss Wall, i daughter of a New Zeaand doctor. • v It is alleged that Stem entered the lady’s cabin at night, carrying an electric torch and a dagger, and attacked Miss Wall, who screamed. Her parents rushed in and overpowered her assailant, wresting the dagger from him. Stem refused to make a statement. He was remanded for medical observation until December 23.
