SWIMMING

“Season tickets have gone off -like hot cakes,” says the caretaker of the Public Baths, “ami the number issued is now more- than in any full sen-son.’ The favourable weather ‘is certain to have a good effect, and the season looks likely to be tremendously good. Club affairs are promising, and when the carnival*: are held the move in popularity will be even more pronuoncecl. The interest taken by the school children, under their masters, is good to see. ' It will have a pronounced good effect on the future. WORLD’S RECORDS. ARNE BORG NOW CHAMPION. Arne Borg, of Sweden, is the greatest all-round swimmer the world has mown, writes “Trident” ,in The Referee (Sydney). This statement has been repeatedly made during the past year. Now we have confirmation of that statement in the latest list of world’s records. The latest list* of world’s records published by the Federation de Natation Amateur, shows that Borg’s have displaced Weissmuller’s world’s re--ords of 300 metres. 3min 35 l-ssec; 400 metres, 4min 57sec; 440 yards, 4min 57sec: 500 yards, omin 47 3-5 sec; ancl 500 metres. 6min 24 l-ssec, reducing them by the following margins : 300 metres, 1 4-10 sec; 400 metres, 6 7-10 see; 440 yards, 4 4-10 sec; 500 yards, 9 s*losec; and 500 metres. 15 8-1 Osec —truly an amazing list. Charlton's 880 yards of 10min 51 4-ssec has been superseded by Borg’s lOmin 37 4-10 sec, and the Manly lad’s 1000 metres best of 13min 19 6Hosec makes way for Borg’s 13min 4 2-10 sec.

Charlton’s 1560 metres effort of 20min 7 2-10 see, at Paris Olympiad, however, appears to have been 'beyond the famous" Swede, who. nevertheless, it credited with the mile record of 21min 41 3-losec, bettering his own world’s best in Sydney Domain Baths of 22-min 34sec by 52 7-10 sec. It is pointed out. however, that Weissmuller’s 500 yards record was- established over a 100 yards tidal water course at Honolulu, whereas Borg’s record was in a 25 yards pool, with 19 turns. Barg’s greatly improved times are attributed to coaching from William Bnchrach. of Illinois Athletic Club. Chicago, of which Borg was for some time a member. Bacbracli is alleged to have lengthened Borg’s reach by nearly four inches and eliminated the crossing of bis catch.
