ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING. The record of a very useful year was •shown at the annual meeting of the Hlawera Orchestra;! Society held, last night in the Carlton rooms. There was a fair attendance and, in the absence of the president, Mr. Page took the chair. Delegates were present from other societies and a. free discussion took place on the question of co-operation in matters of common interest, and consultation one with the other in regard to dates of performances and other questions. ANNUAL REPORT.

The annual report, read by the lion, secretary (Mr. H. J. McLean) congratulated members on the society’s successful .sixth .season, during which better concerts had .been given and better support received from the public than before. The honorary roll was quoted ais 127 and active membership 44. The report referred to the loss of Mr. M. Newberry, land afterwards of the late. Mies M. Good, as leaders, and added that whereas fifteen members had left, sixteen had been received. The public work of the year commenced with a concert on May 11, then assisting efforts for the Male Choir and Municipal Band, and later in the production of Oberon and the final concert on December 3. The year had been the busiest on record. The hon. secretary thanked Mr. and Mrs. Barley for help given, and noted the good work o-f the librarian, Mr. Eustace, and of all members. The .balance-sheet showed that the finances were in a better position than the previous year. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the chairman briefly reviewed points of interest in the work of the society, congratulating all on a successful season and looking forward to even greater success in the future. He expressed cordial approval of the .suggested co-operation of the various societies. In conclusion he commented favourably on the goodwork done by Mr. Fox and urged every member to give the utmost assistance to him in the fine work he was doing in the cause of orchestral music. ELECTION OF OFFICERS.

The following officers were elected : Patron, Mr. E. A. Paeey; president, Mr. J. M. Townsend; vice-presidents, Messrs H. G-. Dickie, M.P.. L. A. Bone, G Laidlaw, R. Page, E. Dixon, P. Donnelly, C. W. Curtis. R, T. Bullock. C J Bulto-n, and CL O'. Ekd-ahl, and Dirs. B-uist and Young; hon. conductor, Mr. H. C. A. Fox; hon. secretary, Mr. H. McLean; assistant, Mrs. King; librarian, Mr. Eustace; -roll steward, Miss N. Elliott; hon. aooompaniste, Miss D. Joll; hon. treasurer, Mr. A. Barley; hon. auditor, Mr. J. M. French; committee, Miss M. Dolan, Mrs. Barley, Mr. CL Hunter, and the president, conductor, secretary and treasurer. Mr. Fox mentioned the matter of a junior orchestra, and said he hoped this proposal would bo taken up vigorously. He also urged the need of more stecond violins and violas, and referred to the addition made to- the orchestra of extra flautist, ofooeist, clarionetist and bassoonist. He urged all to do everything in their power to -help torward the work of the society, and added that the -securing of more honorary and active -members would help very much. Hie briefly indicated the proposed programme for the coming year and said he looked forward confidently to the new season. DEPUTY CONDUCTOR. Mr. Fox stated that he would be unable to take up work until maTch, and at liis suggestion Mi”. A.'G. Barley was appointed deputy conductor, so that work could be commenced: early in the year. APPRECIATION. To show appreciation of the- assistance rendered bv Mr. K. M. Ward, who comes regularly from Ne\y Plymouth to help at- practices and at performances, the members presented him with a hand-some pair of hair brushes, suitably inscribed. FIRST PRACTICE It Was arranged to- hold the first practice on January 25. 1927. ENTERTAINMENT. At the ( end o-f the meeting -a. short musical programme, comprising songs by Mrs. Good son, and Mr. A. E. Morris, violin solo by Mis-s King, and cornet -solo by Mr. Fox, was given -and refreshments served to members and to delegates pi-esent.
