CALF-REARING.

WORK IN SCHOOLS , THE CHAMPIONSHIPS. Interest in the calf-rearing competitions organised in the primary schools of Taranaki has been very keen, and it culminated yesterday when, after the group results were known in the group No. VI, the championships were decided at Eltham. Owing to the exceedingly bad weather, the locale had to be altered . I'oni the Loan Company’s Kaleyards to a stable behind the Railway Hotel for the gioup judging, kindly lent by Mr. Patterson, and later the championships, in which entries were very large and the number of friends and parents present so large that the judging work was done in the spacious stables in Bridge Street, kindly put at the disposal of the committee by Mr. W. G. Crozier. These answered the purpose admirably, and to both gentlemen the cordial thanks of the executive were freely expressed. The quality of exhibits all round was exceedingly good and even, and evoked hearty and unstinted admiration from the judges. Speaking of the animals when judging on dairy type, Mr. F. Hoskin, the judge, said that they were difficult to separate, and the first four were very close 'and of excellent qu'ality. They were, in his opinion, far ahead of those of the previous year. The judges for condition, Messrs A. T. Wills. L. S. Barraclough, and W. P. Jenkins, were unstinted in their approval, and took endless trouble in making their awards. They had a problem, because, as will be seen by the marks awarded, th.ei-e was very little difference between the leading calves. PRESENTATIONS. Introducing Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., to those present, Air. El K. Cameron, secretary to the* Farmers’ Union executive. first read apologies from the Hon. O. •). llawken, Messrs E. Walter, M.P., and Mr. M. C. Crightou, secretary of Ihe Egmont A. and P. Association. lie cordially thanked all who had helped, oil behalf of the Farmers’ Union and the clubs’ executive, and especially mentioned the honorary judges, who had given much time and thought and gone to considerable expenes to help the movement along. He also cordially thanked the newspapers of South Taranaki for the great publicity given and the interest displayed. He also expressed hearty appreciation of the organising work of Mr. Rod Syme and Mr. A. S. Glasson. In presenting the two medals, Mr. Dickie referred to the services rendered to the community by the Bovs’ and Girls’ Clubs instituted by the Farmers’ Union and Agricultural Department, in conjunction with the EducaI ion Board. He showed how t he movement had grown by quoting the fact that entries had increased from 177 (150 judged) in 1925 to 283 in 192 G. Of the latter number 242 had actually appeared and been judged. He said it gave great encouragement to see the splendid calves being reared, and that it was a capital thing for the children to rear good animals. He hoped the movement would grow and he a factor in improving the dairy herds. Taranaki stock was, used in tlie south and was in the forefront. He urged the youngsters who had not won not to be discouraged The children had been to much trouble to present the calves in such good order He* then presented the Hawken and McL’Dowie medals to

K. Shearin and John Johnson, and the special money prizes to' the winners. The children to the number of sixtythree were entertained at luncheon, and this attention was very heartily appreciated. Both, the winning calves, in Jersey and Ayrshire sections —L-. Brown’s (Douglas, with 127 marks and J. Foreman’s (Tawliiti), with 128£ marks — were exceptionally fine and well-grown and were much admired. But the margin separating them from the next was of the smallest. Results were as under: 'GROUP NO. VI. (Rawihitiroa, Te Roti, Ngaere, Finnorty, Pukengahu, Mangatoki). REIARJ.NG. Jersey.
