MAORI WAR VETERAN.

MAJOR GASCOYNE PASSES. (BV TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION . 1 HASTINGS, Dec. 3. Major Frederick William Gascoyne, a veteran of the Maori War, died this morning at the age of 88 yeans. He was born at Cawnpore- in 1838, and came to New Zealand with his father, an officer of the East India Company, in 1853. He joined the colonial defence force in 18631 and subsequenty joined Captain Fraser’s expedition for service on the East Coast. He took part in many important engagement® in the Maori War. Major Gascoyne was for a time magistrate at the Chatham Islands, after which he' -settled at Hastings, where he lived in retirement for close on 30 years.
