FRUITLESS SEARCH.
DISAPPEARANCE OF MRS. CHRISTIE. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, Dec. 11. There has perhaps been no greater search in England than the week-long efforts, on behalf of Mrs Christie. Every inch of the country in the vicinity of the abandoned car has been overturned fruitlessly by hundreds of police anu civilians. The police activity changed in form to-day. The theory is now that she is alive. Letters from all over England are reaching the police telling of strange women everywhere. The majority are useless, but others suggest possibilities. The strangest is an anonymous document, posted to the police, and reading; ‘‘Do not continue your search further, it is useless; everything is well.” The handwriting had obviously been disguised. Mrs. Christie’s husband had long, undisclosed conversations with the police chiefs, after which he said: “The police are up against it; they cannot say what is the real solution.” The police are working on three propositions. One is that the disappearance was planned deliberately in accordance with many plots contained in her novels; the second is that private troubles have caused her to take her own life, though the fruitless search of the neighbourhood largely discounts this. Finally, she may 'have been murdered and her body conveyed elsewhere by oar. Certainly it is the most complete disappearance without trace that the police recollect.
