OPUNAKE.
TOWN BOARD MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent). The monthly meeting of the Opunake Town Board was held on Monday evening. Present: Messrs C. A. Trotter 1 (chairman), «J. Caddy, H. Mun.ro, W. Fawcett, W. Gunson, Ft. Davey. An apology was received from Mr P. F. Hammond. The members conferred with the architect for the new Bank of New Zealand premises in regard to the building by-laws, and the board made a special order to obtain discretionary powers in this and future cases of hardship. Mrs B. Whiting, the successful lessee of. the Town Hall, with the right to show pictures there, waited oil the board and asked for amendments iu the terms of the lease as follows: That the lessee be liable for damages on the nights only that the lessee uses the hail; that if the board let the hall on Tuesday nights to applicants other than pictures, the lessee to be released from payment for those particular nights.—The board agreed to the conditions asked for. Messrs ltov and Nicholson, solicitors, New Plymouth, wrote on behalf of Mr Norman Andrews, that their client’s tender was the only valid for the lease of tie Town Hall. If any other tender wei e accepted their client would | claim substantial damages.—On the' motion of Messrs Fawcett and' Gunson. the board’s soliictor (Mr C. O. Edmonds) was authorised to reply to the letter.
The Taranaki Hospital Board wrote, stating that the' board and Egmont County Council were required to erect and maintain a morgue at Opunake. The Hospital Board would give the ambulance shed (at the back of the Police Station! which wa,s suitable, and would also provide a site.—The board decided to ask B for further information.
'l’lie Schoo 1 Committee was granted a reduction to half price for hire of the ball for the recent school concert.
'Pile works’ committee’s report recommended improving the angle of approach to the Xumu beach bridge, on the 'Main Road, and putting a load of pit gravel or shingle on Whitcomibe Road. —The report was adopted, and it was decided to call for tenders for the work.
The foreman (Mr A. C. Donnelly) reported that the concrete blocks, (Bewt each) could nob be put in position over the Post Office until after the holidays, as the Power Board crane Would not be available until then. He estimated that it would take about 150 yards of metal for Whitcombe Road. He recommended widening the culvert on the Main Road near the pound, in anticipation of tar-sealing. The grav-
elling on streets authorised had been pushed on during the month; maintenance work had been attended to; and pipe-making had been carried out on vyet days. —The ieport was adopted. Fees for registration of dogis were fixed at 7s Gd for sporting dogs, and 2s Gd for cattle, dogs. It was decided to sue for all rates and rentals twelve months in arrears. The tender of Dos Forge© and Clare (£o7) for the erection of a shelter shed at the cemetei"'* • and the tender of Mr J. Martin (£5) for the right to cut and remove grass from the Domain, were accepted.
