SEMI-FINAL J EDGING. TE KIRI. ANI) K A PONG A. l!he .semi-final judging of calves-•'« Groups 1-Y and \ (ie Kiri and Kaponga. respectively) took place yesterday. Mr. A. 1. Wills (Hatveraj wu-s the judge for condition and Mr. Rod S;yme acted in his usual capacity <s judge ol charts. At each school the judges commented favourably on the fine appearance of the -animals presented and -impressed upon the youthful owners the necessity of continued care of their charges during the ensuing year, at the end of which they hoped to have the pleasure of judging them as well developed yearlings. Owners of placed calves were reminded that the championship judging is to take place at the Loan and Mercantile Company’s sa-leya-rds, Eltham, on December 14, at 12.1.) p.m.. Special for Dairy Type. The services of Mr J. Pettigrew (Pihama) were here called into requisition to judge the whole entry in Group I\ . and determine- the best calf on dairy type. A special gold medal, presented by an anonymous member of the Awa-tuna-Te Kiri branch of the Farmers’ Union, was the award, which was won by. Miss Ruth Corbett (Awatuna) with a splendid Jersey calf. KAPONGA
Mr D. P. Malone (Kaponga), who had previously judged on dairy type in Group V., attended for the purpose of presenting his gold medal for the best calf (dairy type) shown at Kaponga school. 'Phis was won by Ken Harding with a typical Jersey. In the course of his encouraging remarks to the winner and his- fellowpupils, Mr Malone trusted that the medal would always remind him of the present result of his youthful endeavour and spur him on to further and greater success. Hearty applause was accorded both donor and winner, who, by the way, was the youngest competitor present. On Mr Malone reminding the pupils that he intended giving a gold medal for the best dairy tvne calf in the
■ to which the Kaponga school is attached next year, Mr A. Gargan generously offered to also award a gold medal, under the same conditions, in respect of the Riverlea school. MV J. Bailie, headmaster, returned thanks to Messrs Malone and. Gargan. expressing the hope that their generosity would he the means of greatly increasing entries.
