CALF-REARING.
SCHOOL GROUP JUDGING. A VERY PINE LOT. The evenness in quality of the calves brought together as winners at their respective schools to-day at Otakeho (Group III.), at Matapu (Group II.), and at Hawera (Group I.) was remarkable, especially at Hawera, where for the ten Jerseys there were only thirteen points difference between first and last. This tvas also a marked feature at the other two centres, and spoke well for the good rearing by the youngsters. The judges both mentioned this point, and the entries at Hawera, they said, were the most even lot they had soon and a credit, to the boys and girls who had looked after them. It was somewhat of a business getting the calves to “market” so to speak, and it is worth notice that four were brought to Hawera from the country in motor-cars. The judging on condition was done bv Mr A. T. Wills at the first two centres, and ho was joined by Mr Barraclough at Hawera. Mr Rod Syme, as at other places, was in charge of proceedings. The movement has grown very much since last year, 242 entries being received as against 151 last year. The standard generally has improved very considerably. The winners of the groups will go to Eltliam on Tuesday next when, from them will be selected the champion calf. Interest will he added by the competition for a gold modal presented by Mr W. McL’Dowie for. the best dairy type calf of the placed animals in the groups present at the championships. The calf judging trophies given by the south Taranaki Farmers’ Union executive will be to the value of £5, £3 and £2 respectively, in both Jersey-Ayrslure and Shorthorn-Friesian breeds.
