PATIENT DIVES OVERBOARD. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) NAPIER, Dec. 3. When about half a mile from the breakwater this morning, the steamer Wainui was stopped owing to a mentally affected Maori, who was being escorted to Porirua, jumping overhoard. The escort, a Gisborne policeman, jumped in after him, and held him up until a boat from the Wainui picked them up. Both were given a change of clothes and joined the southbound train.
PIPE IN TECHNICAL SCHOOL. , PUKEKOHE, Dec. 3. A fire gutted the forge and metal work room at the Pukekohe Technical H igh School this morning._ Smokei was seen issuing from the building at .six o’clock but no notice was taken, as it was believed the fires were lit for the day’s work. Flames broke out at 8.20. The- brigade arrived promptly, but owing to a blocked ball cock, water front the main was not available for fully five minutes, but when the supply wa.s obtained the flames were quickly subdued, though not before half the building was extensively damaged. It was not known whether the valuable machinery was damaged by beat beyond use.
