WOOL SEASON

THE WELLINGTON SALE. A SOUND OPENING. MODERATE CATALOGUE. (By Telegraph..—Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 15. The first New Zealand wool sale ot the season opened soundly. The bulk of a moderate catalogue was disposed of before the lunch adjournment. Prices for super Romney, especially hoggets, were much better than had been anticipated. There was a keen demand from Americans for this wool; also, for preparing wools of 44 and 46 quality. On the other hand, medium to paying crossbreds were rather dull, the prices bid being below anticipation. Bellies and pieces showing quality brought good rates. France was the principal purchaser of halfbreds and Merinos, of which there was only a small offering. Prices were not equal to Australian fates, consequently the passing-in was heavy, but it is generally anticipated that the best wools, later in the season, will meet good conditions. Scouring wools brought average prices, and the general impression is that the rates throughout are on a par with those ruling in March, 1026, though super crossbreds, of preparing length, were dearer. The usual buying countries are fully represented, but the lots were not generally suitable for continental trade. Germany is not such a large buyer as she will, probably be later. Americans bought sparingly, picking the eyes out of the catalogues. They took a fair number of super lots at satisfactory rates.
