TYPHOON IN EASTERN SEAS.
SHIPPING AND RAILWAY SERVICES HELD UP. 9 Central Japan and the eastern coast of the main island were struck by tilt worst typhoon in recent years on September 4, centring and doing most damage in Shidzuoka and Yamanashi prefectures. Deaths are likely to reach 100, including 50 known casualties in a passenger train wreck oil the Takaitk main line, the train overturning as the result of an undermined roadbed. In Tokio, at the edge of the typhoon, rain fell in torrents, and the wind mounted a gale, but beyond unroofing a score of houses the damage was nominal. .High seas, almost a tidal wave in Tokio Bay, threatened the embankments in the lower part of the city, where police and fire brigades were mobilised, anticipating inundations with the incoming x-ide. Disrupted communications prevented Tokio front obtaining complete information about the wreck, but relief trains were sent. In addition to the passenger wreck there was a derailment of a freight train, which forced suspension of service. on the main line between Tokio and Kobe. Many trains were stormbound at stations. One passenger train was narrowly saved from wreck when villagers noticed a landslide between Yii and Okitsu and flagged tlie train.
Five factory workers were killed and 25 iniufed when wind toppled over the weaving pliant dormitory in Shidzuoka prefecture. Tokio’s electric power was turned off for long periods during the day, stopping the trolleys, and the electric and inter-urban to Yokohama.. The storm, ragged, along the coaist, playing havoc with countless fishing boats. Ships further out at sea were warned to steer clear of the typhoon area., but considerable fear is felt for vessels known to have been caught near the coast. Tlie typhoon passed quick-1 v, the sun breaking through, late in, the afternoon and the wind subsiding.
