Scottish society’s observance. CHILDREN’S ANNUAL FUNCTION. This year’s Hallowe’en celebration by the Hawera Scottish Society, which was held in the Foresters’ Hall last evening, evidently lost none of the customary attraction through being postponed from the usual date. Since the formation of the society Hallowe’en has been observed as children’s night, and successful functions have been arranged, providing keen enjoyment for the juvenile gatherings. About 50 young associates of the society. whose ages ranged from three to 14 years, with a corresponding number of adult members, were in attendance at last, evening’s function, which fully maintained the reputation gained by its nredeeessors. Under the direction of the genial chieftain (Air \V. G. Simpson). Airs Simpson, and Airs C. T. Twaddle, a programme of rollicking games, dances, and concert items was arranged. The apples and nuts—regarded as practically inseparable from the observance of the ancient function—were distributed in abundance. the former per the medium of water-filled tubs, from which they were retrieved by the teeth of the needments, and the nuts by means of ’crambles. Throughout the proceedings the youthful celebrants entered with keen enthusiasm into the spirit of the occasion. and demonstrated their keen appreciation of the enjoyment provided. ’Pbe following children contributed '•I the concert programme: Elsie '''waddle, Margaret Lamb and Billy Green (songs'). Atolly McKinnon (oianoforte solo), Donald and Gordon Smart < dnet), Ernie Yelvin ( recitations), all of whom were accorded enthusiastic encores, while, as "a special feature, the solo dancing of Doreen Nairn, who "eve graceful internretalions of the oomdar fling, was the subject of much favourable comment.
