MATAPU.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) TENNIS CLUB. The annual meeting of the Matapu Tennis Club was held on Wednesday evening, when the president, Mr J. O’Sullivan, presided over a fair attendance of members. The balancesheet. which was read and adopted, showed that the club commenced the, season with the sum of £l9 13s 3d, but, owing to the annual ball not being a financial success, part of this sum was drawn to meet the expenses, and the funds now stand at £l6 17s 7d. Mr Ralph Hooker, the club’s chairman, placed his resignation before the meeting, stating that he had too much work to do to consider carrying on. Miss M. Hawkes. secretary, also resigned, as she expected to he leaving the district. Both resignations were accepted with regret, Mr O'Sullivan paving a glowing tribute to the splendid work done by these two valued members. Nominations were taken to fill the positions, and Miss Frethey was elected to the chair, while Miss Florice Seed was elected secretary. The officers elected for the ensuing year were: Patron, Hon. O. J. Uawken; president, Mr J. O’Sullivan; vice-presi-dents, Messrs Seed, Thomas, Petty, Sharpe, Conroy, Carter. . . A committee was set up, comprising all those at the meeting, -with power to add. It was decided that the opening ceremony take place on November 20. and that kindred clubs be invited to attend, the tennis to take the form of a Yankee tournament, and the local ladies to be asked to provide afternoon It was decided to re-tar the court and also secure some more balls, and the meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks, carried by acclamation, to Mr Hooker and Miss Hawkes for their active services to the club since its inauguration. HEADMASTER LEAVING.

Mr W. R. Adams, for the past two years headmaster of the local school, resigned at last Monday’s meeting of the committee, and will take up a similar position at the Moturoa School, New Plymouth. During his stay in Matapu Mr Adams has endeared himself to scholars and parents alike with hr genial and sportsmanlike manner, and regret is expressed on all sides that he is leaving us. Mr Adams took an active interest in local affairs and was organiser of the local English Fair committee. Although we will be sorry to lose Mr Adams, all join in wishing both himself and Mrs Adams the very best of luck in New Plymouth. SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS.

The headmaster, Mr Adams, reports that the annual examination results for the Matapu School are as follows: • Std. 1: Lorna Scott 1, J. Prestidge 2. M. Minhinnick 3. Std. 2: V. Kelly 1, R. Prestidge 2, H. Giddy 3. Std. 3: Norma Thomas 1, Nora Donald 2, E. Nicholas 3. Std. 4: Cyril Radford 1, Nora Pratt 2, D. Prestidge 3. Std. 5: Phyllis Beech 1, Bessie Seed 2, R. Henry 3. Std. 6: Edith Beech 1, .T. Prestidge 2, Hazel Cleaver 3. Those pupils exempt for proficiency certificates. but who still have to be examined in history, geography, civics and agriculture, are J. Prestidge, E. Beech, 11. Cleaver, M. Murry and O. Warner. There is keen competition to be dux of the school, and at present Edith Beech holds first position, Hazel Cleaver second 'and Jim Prestidge third. These positions may be changed when the inspector’s examination results are known. PERSONAL. Miss Kathleen Brown, who has been confined to her bed with appendicitis, is now about again. Miss Hoskin, Skeet Road, has been seriously indisposed in Kaponga, but it is understood that she is rapidly recovering. The many friends of Mr Bootten will be sorry to hear of his rather serious illness and will all wish him a speedy neoverv. GENERAL. The local factory is now turning out 55 cheeses, and*the manager reports that the milk supply has increased over last season, and the tests are also better. Two local crayfish parties recently visited Opunake, and the first netted ICO crayfish, while the second party caught. 34 in last week’s howling gale.
