DIMPLES.
Twin kletoes and Nimblefoot, the Fairy Queen’s favourite brownies, were busy laying the cloth for her dinner, when with a hop, skip and jump up came Feathery. “Oh!” he cried, “you should see what I’ve found.” “What is it?” asked Twinkletoes. “You seem very excited about it.” “So would you be. And I should never have found it if it hadn’t been for young Sidney Squirrel. I saw him running off with the Fairy Queen’s acorns, those nice brown ones that we stored in the oak tree last year.” “The rascal!” cried Nimblefoot and Twinkletoes. “So I rushed after him; and such a dance he led me until we came to a garden hedge. Over he jumped, and 1 jumped, too, right into somebody’s garden. And there was a carriage, and inside the carriage a baby with blue eyes and golden hair.” “Oh. let’s go and have a peep,” said Twinkletoes. So off trinped the brownies, out of the fairy. ring and over the garden hedge. They' crept on tijitoe so that they might not wake the. baby; then, to see him better, they elimlied up the wheels of the carriage. Feathery sat at the foot and Twinkletoes and Nimblefoot one on each side. And then Baby awoke, and when he saw the brownies looking at him instead of his Mummy he screwed up his blue eyes and pulled down his lips and began to cry. “Oh. don’t crv. Baby dear!” said the brownies in dismay. And to soothe him thev touched his little face with their fingers, and to their delight he "coed and laughed; and where the h>ownies’ fingers touched thev left' a dimple, one in each cheek and one in the middle of his chin. And so nlensed were the brownies that even since, when thev find babies owing, thev make them laugh in the same wav. ' Ami thev always leave the mark of theb- little fingers on the baby faces, and that is why there are so many dimnled darlings about.
