THE CASTLE PLEDGE.
I promise to smile every time I can, and to chase all the frowns into the dark cave, where the Smile Giant will kill them with his Magic Sword Happiness.
Dear Smiles, There are several things I wish to talk to you about to-night. Here they are: TTiave been looking through all my books of your ages, birthdays, addresses, marks, and general notes on you and your work, both for the Caatle and its competition and that w r hich you do at home, at school, at play, and your duties of smiling and making people happy, and 1 find much to praise in some of you while there is room for improvement in others. I need sav no more about this. You understand me. In the birthday lists, there are some ages missing. Phoebe Allen, Mildred Large, Claude Ricketts, Linda Davies, Barbara Mortloek, Mavis Francis, Marjorie Jordan, I have the day and month, but not your ages on tliftse days and months. Please would you send them along? Eileen Kelson is nine in December, but I don ’t know which day. George Barkla has a birthday in April; but which it is, and on which day I cannot tell. Next, you know that several .Smiles leave our district and so do not see our Castle page. They are still interested and some would still write to us, but it 's not much fun writing and getting no reply and not seeing a paper with your letter in it. I want now to ask that we may have volunteers to write to these distant Smiles. 1 know they’d love it. and you would enjoy writing, too. Whose name will be the first in, saying lie or she will write to another Smile? We shall be pleased to publish letters (or extracts) that you receive as reply. This, too: When one of you leaves the* district or changes his or her address, please send me the new address. This week we have letters from Joyce and Faith RockeJl in North Auckland. Who will write to them? My last announcement is another competition. It is a drawing. For all over 10 it is a' spray of three roses with leaves, -while for those under 10. two pansies and leaves. Your name and age must be written on the back of your drawdng. I expect such a pile of entries, that I’m sending three other messengers with Perseus. You won’t disappoint me? Remember it’s nearing the end of the year and every mark counts. All drawings must reach me by Tuesday, November 30, at the latest. Now please get busy at once on all these things and let there be the biggest mail yet for THE SMILE QUEEN.
