!n the'opening event the Peter MeKinne.x —Young Blake bracket was not quite as well backed as The Toft —• Buiidaherg bracket. Kola Boy, Lady Kan, and Queen Ida began best and led lor a mile, but then Lady Fan was interfered with bv Kola Boy and lost her place. Kola Hoy went on and won by a length from Pete Peter, who was unlucky in the running, with Bundahorg lour lengths away third, and Peter McKinney and Queen Ida next. |’ut for breaking up, Peter McKinney might have been hard to beat. For the interference with Lady Fan, N. L. Price, driver of Kola Boy, was fined £25.
Direct Wood was a hot favourite for the St. Albums Handicap, but never flattered his supporters. Dalmeny, Lady Wildwood, Macaranda, and Tarzan raced in that order for six furlongs, and then Lady Wildwood retired. Dalmeny went on and beat Macaranda by three-quarters of a length, with Tarzan a head away third. Dreamalion and Talent were next. Bing Boy was left at the start. It was a poor race. In the Trotting Cup, Black Admiral was the only horse withdrawn. Dolly Dillon, Native Chief, and Queeii’s Own did not begin correctly, and they interfered with some of the back markers, including Waitaki Girl. Talaro was first out from Prince Pointer and Acron, with Native Chief and Ahuriri next. At the back the next time Prince Pointer led from Native Chief, Talaro, Acron, Ahuriri, and Waitaki Girl. At the stands the second time round Prince Pointer led Native Chfer and Talaro, with Acron, Ahuriri, Man o’ War, and Waitaki Girl following in that order. Ahuriri made a great run down the back the last time, and joined Talaro just behind Prince Pointer, with Acron and Man o’ War easing up just ahead of the rest. Over the last two furlongs the race was confined to the three leaders. Ahuriri ran pastTalaro at the turn, and, going on,, soon headed olf Prince Pointer. Ahuriri won easily at the end by three lengths from Prince Pointer, who defeated Talaro by lour lengths. Jack Potts came with a rattle to beat Alan o’ War for fourth prize. Acron was sixth, and Waitaki Girl and Queen’s Own were next. Berenice was favourite for the Empire Handicap—a good betting race. Berenice began best from Holly Boy, Pearl Coronado, Logan Holme, and Double Event. Pearl Coronado and .Logan Holme both lost ground in the straight, and down the hack Taurekareka, followed by Cardinal Logan,' moved up very fast. Taurekareka and Cardinal Logan were up with Berenice and Holly Boy at the turn, and Diamond Child was also handy. Taure-
kareka did best in the run to the post, and boat Holly Boy by a length and a. half. Cardinal Logan was a iength away third, and Diamond Child,
Berenice, St. Aiaura, and Double Event next. St. Maura and Cardinal Logan should soon do better.
Homer was the pick for the Riccarlon Handicap, but there was heavy support, for William the Great and I'ouiig Blake. Lord Bingen began smaruy, and led past the stands from Grey Cloud, General Bingen, Bob Logan, and Bundaberg. Young Blake broke up and lost a good deal of ground at the end of half a mile. With six furlongs to go, Lord Bingen still led from General Bingen, Grey Cloud, Bob Logan, Young Blake, and Bundaberg. Homer, who had been siow away, had run up handy with half a mile to go, but she fell two furlongs from home. Lord Bingen was not after-
wards troubled, and won easily by two lengths from Bundaberg, who broke up on the post. General Bingen, William the Great, Bob J.ogan, Young Blake, and Alvara were next
The big race for unlioppled trotters, usually run on the last day of the meeting, aroused interest and provided a liigh-class contest, much superior to that for the Cup. Betting was spirited, and Peterwah, Escapade, and Money Spider between them carried over £6990. Clonmel began best and led Master Audo, Bonny Spec, Lee Todd, Escapade, Money Spider, and Whispering Willie. At the stands, Master Audo had gone to the front from Lee Todd, Clonmel, Escapade, Aloney Spider, Bonny Spec, and Petervvah. At the stands the next time round Master Audo just led Lee Todd, with Aloney Spider, Clonmel, Peter wall and Escapade all handy. Peterwah made a fast run down the back the last time round, and, with Aloney Spider, drew away in a great contest over the last two furlongs. Peterwah and Aloney Spider battled out the finish, Peterwah beating his opponent by a neck. Escapade was six lengths away third, and Master Aqdo, John Mauritius, Whispering Willie, and Lee Todd next. Tom T'humb and Silk Thread were just a little better backed than Alain voyage in the Victoria Handicap. Silk thread, who galloped for the first halfmile, Jed j ting Boy, Tom Thumb, i.adv Embrace, and Dalnaliine. Silk Thread, who continuallybroke, threatened to disorganise the field, but kept his prominent position. Alain Voyage made a fast run round his field, and at tlie turn Dalnaliine, Bing Boy, Silk Thread and Alain Voyage headed a bunched field. Silk Thread stayed .on best, and beat Dalnaliine by two lengths, with Alain Voyage three lengths away third, .stormy was fourth, and .Ring Boy and Succession next. The winner had to undergo an inquiry for galloping, and was subsequently disqualified for “exess ive galloping.” Leiavan’s Quest, Glenelg, and Great Hope were all heavily backed for the (oneluding event. Glenelg led out first, and Roi cole and Logauwood were very slow away. Glenelg led down the straight from Logauwood, Locanda Mae, Bonny Logan, Roicole, Dillon \\ ilkes, Becky Logan, and Delavan’s Quest. The last-named put in a fast un down the back, and Bonny Logan dso improved his position, but at the urn Glenelg still led irom Bonny Logan, Lightnin’, Locanda Mac, and Delavau’s Quest. The last-named kept ip bis run, but failed to reach Bonny .ogan, who shot away in the straight, >y two lengths. Glenelg was a head :way third, and Reeky Logan, Locanda Mac, I’oicule, and Logan Chief next. Alter the St. Albans Handicap the onnections of Direct Wood, who was
lavounte for the event, were asked to explain the performance of the mare. •1. McLennan, her rider, said she had lost ground at the start, and was never afterwards able to pick it up. Mr. G. J. Barton, the owner of the mare, also gave evidence, and the committee aciepced his explanation.
