HIGHWAYS CONTROL.
EG MONT COUNTY COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Egmont County Council was held yesterday. Present: Crs. AY. C. Green, J. C. Young, J. Hickey, A. J. Lilley, J. 6. fosland, E. A. Collins, G. Gibson. J. E. shepherd, It. C. Watson. A motion of sympathy with the clerk, Mr G. W. ltogers. in, his illness, and expressing hopes For his speedy recox cry, was carried. In the absence of the clerk, the engineer (Mr. I l '. M. Cork ill) undertook the secretarial duties. The engineer, Mr P. M. Corkill, submitted his report for the month as follows: Main .Roads Construction. —Contract No. 4114: Progress has been disappointing, only 112 chains having been metalled-during October. This poor result lias been due to a crusher breakdown lasting a week, and to bad weather. A new start was made on 2nd. November on grouting on the road to Haw-era, but only two days ’ work has been done. Contract No. 30S: The crushing outfit is almost ready, but no work has yet been done at Puniho. Both boulder contractors have made little progress this month. Bridges. —The centring and steel for the second span of the Mangahume (Elthani road) bridge lias mostly been placed.- Several Roods have, caused damage to the work at the Waiaua bridge (Wiremu road). One foundation was ready for concreting on October 28, when the work was destroyed by a Hood the same night. The contractor is making his preparations for the Punehu and the Pungaereere (Rahotu road) bridges. The Main Highways Board has declined to commit itself to any further bridge work than that already provided for in the estimates. Maintenance. —A further half-mile of the Main South Herat!, north of Pungareliu, has been scarified and rolled. The roller then patched right through to Puniho, and i s now engaged in scarifying and rolling at Itaholu township. Patching and draining has been done throughout the balance oi the main loads. Ueo Hiding.—The Upunake-Stratford Hoad has been patched and the Ouri bridge painted. The \\ atino, Patiki, and rNopera Hoads have been patched. Upua Hiding.—Work is being carried out on the Upper (Jpua Hoad forma-j tion. The Lower Kina has been finished olf by rolling in the new metal. Patching has been done on the Upua, Upper Kina, Namu, Lower Waiteika, Kaweora, and ihaia Hoads. Rahotu Hiding.—The Lower Pariiiaka, Opourapa,' Tipoku, Hahotu, ami Ngariki Hoads have been attended to. , Newall Hiding.—Work has been started on the Watarou Hoad by the contractor, and the Stent Hoad contract has been arranged. Patching has' been done on the \\ area Hoad. General.- The annual inspection of machinery was carried out at the cud of the month. • The Aveling and Porter engine required to have new tubes, and while the contractors are having this done the Fowler engine has been lent to them. When it is free, the yictal at the Parihaka Hoad will be crushed for main roads maintenance. The annual inspection of the Upua riding by-roads was made with the riding members, and in the Hahotu riding the work on the Upper Kahui Hoad was decided upon with the riding members. Specifications have been drawn up for this work, and they have been approved by the Public Works Department and tenders have been called. Tenders have also been called tor the supply oi gravel for gritting the Main South Hoad and lor a portion of the met a lling of I lie Okaliu Hoad. TENDERS, Tenders for the undeimentioned contracts were accepted : Delivery of ISO yards sand at Piliama. —P. NorthcoFt, <s fid per yard. Delivery of GUO yards sand on Main South Hoad, near Hlaliotu (in lour sections). —P. Noithcott, Gs, 7s 3d, <s 3d, 7s 3dt per yard. Forming. 344 chains of the Upper Kahui Hoad. —P New thcutl, £2OO 17s fid. HANGING MATTERS. The ranger. Mr. H. W iltshire, in replying to the council's request tor him to supply names oi owners of wandering stock, in order that' prosecutions might he instituted, .stated that this was rather unfair. It was an inspector's duty to report names for prosecution. but' a ranger could hardly be expected to do this under the circumstances that lie only received I.os per week. At present there was hardly a living in the position without obtaining casual work. He had spoken to several of the councillors and they had agreed that he kept the roads as clear as possible under the circumstances. — Received. The ranger reported that he had impounded 113 head of stock during the month. EMPRK)VEMENTS TO HOADS. M. Fleming, of Pungareliu, wrote drawing the attention of the council to the .state of the Harvey and Pun-; gareliu Hoads. The latter, in particular. was in a very bad state and if it were not attended to shortly it would be impossible lor the settlers to cart milk to the factory. He mentioned that there was a gravel pit at one end of this road and another handy.—The engineer was instructed to attend to the matter as .soon as possible. H, M. Reynolds and M. Ilnnett. residents of the Rum made application for a loan of £175 for the draining and formation of the road. ffc was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the clerk to take the necessary action. GENERAL. On t!ie recommendation of the Undersecretary of the Lands Department, it was decided to recommend that the following be appointed trustees of the Pihama cemetery: Messrs B. J. Dull'v, j. D. Conaglcu. A. Campbell, J, Ilarrop and J. Pettigrew. The Highway Board’s representative of No. District Highway Council, Mr T. M. Ball, advised that an examination for certificate of competency under the Main Highways Act would be held in the second week of January, 1927. Received. Mrs Annie Goodev wrote conveying thanks on behalf of herself and family for the council’s kindness to her late husband and for the resolution of. sympathy in her bereavement. —Received. The circular from the Department of Internal Affairs concerning observance of Armistice Day was received. The district engineer of the PublicWorks Department forwarded a copy of the authority for a grant of £l5O on a £2 for £1 subsidy basis for the metalling of 344 chains, in two sections, of the Upper Kahui road. Tenders for this work were received and accepted. The chairman and engineer were deputed to visit Wellington and wait upon the Minister of Public Works in regard to authority for expenditure of bridge loan moneys-.
