P IG-LOADING AT HAWERA.
(To the, Editor)
Sir, —Witn your sand permission, I ssnoiud like, tnrougn tno commas oi your valuable paper, to ventilate a grievance wnich, aitliougn by no means new, is nevertne.ess ot burning intensity” to tnose affected. 1 refer to tne locality of the pig-loading yards at the Hawera Railway fetation, and tne consequent hardships imposed oil nearby residents. Sir, if tlie official or officials wiio control such matters could be enticed to spend one night —on.y one —in the neighbourhood of these yards, i feel sure that no further complaints wouid be necessary. A speedy remedy would soon be -evolved. Apart iinoni the squealing and general pandemonium, wnich reigns alt night long — and 1 assure you, sir, “Shamus” can emit some good crescendos at times—residents are plagued with swarms of filthy disease-carrying flies, while the odours borne on the wind are, at times, choking. The Railway Department will probably- state that nothing can be done to a'leviate the nuisance pending the erection of new railway station and yards; but surely that is asking for a great deal of unnecessary forbearance a(nd patience. Might 1 suggest to the Department that a partial solution might be found if loading and unloading were prohibited between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., and loaded trucks were placed on the' sidings well away from the residential area ? Believe me, Mr Editor, my humble effort is not directed at causing complete disorganisation in the railway” yards. 1 wish only to make it clear to those concerned that residents in the localty mentioned above are no more partial to pig vards and their occupants than their fellow-citizens who reside in, the neighbourhood of Nelson Street. Thanking you for your valuable space, and trusting that the matter will not be allowed to rest until an effort is made to have things put right, 1 am, ft ADVANCE HAWERA. November 5. [Our correspondent will notice, from a report on page four of our issue tonight. that other residents are moving matter. —Ed. Star.]
