f MONTHLY BOARD MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Opuiiako I [arbour Board \v;us held- yesterday Present, Messrs T. P. Hughson (chairman), R. Watson, J. A. Pettigrew. L. A. Trotter, 0. H. Hurst. H. Young and T. H. 11. Sinclair. REPORTS.
The works committee reported tiiathe train line had been completed to Middleton Bay. The small crane had been moved and placed at the cud ©I the line in readiness to deal with -medium stone. The air compressor had been shifted to a, central position and the air lino laid to operate the drills at the Middleton’s Bay site and also at the root of the breakwater. The small hauler had been placed in position for dealing with trucks, assisting the locomotive on the incline, and had been used in bringing up rails and sleepers, 't he supply water tank in the paddock had 'boon raised about 12 feet in order to make it possible to supply the machines on the higher level. T lie Government inspector of machinery hurt inspected the board’s plant, and had instructed that a new funnel should be supplied to the large hauler. Quotations had been invited for the supni of this. In consequence of operating both cranes and haulers sinmltaneouslv, it was recommended that an additional driver should be engaged as soon as possible. As a result, ol forming, laying lines, and putting machinery into position, only a small quantity of stone had been deposited in the mole during the month, but next period was expected to produce better results. Although some very heavy weather had been experienced during the month, no movement had taken place in the mole, the structure withstanding thg. elements well, and the shelter already afforded being quite noticeable. The report was adopted. Three quotations for the supply of new a funnel for the hauler was received, but were placed in the hands of the works committee with power to act.Th© finance committee reported that the £SOOO loan had been floated on satisfactory terms, the money having already been received. The rate of interest was six per cent, with one per cent sinking fund, the loan being repayable in 1933. It was proposed to place as, much of the loan a.s possible on fixed deposit at the Bank of New Zealand. The committee recommended that deposits be placed a-s follows: £ISOO for six months, £IOOO for four months, £IOOO for three months.— Adopted. ALTERATION TO TRAMLINE.
Mr. Young brought up the matter of lessening the grade, on the tramline from the construction works to Middleton’s Bay, from which the stone was taken. He believed that it would save using the hauler on part of the incline, and that it would obviate the necessity of employing an additional driver.
The chairman doubted the advisability of the scheme, but Mr. Young pointed out that the grade would have to he lessened eventually, and it would save expense if it were done now. On the motion of Messrs Hurst and Watson it was decided to ask the engineer what could he done in the matter. GENERAL. The engineer, Mr. H. Vickeiman, reported that plans for the wharf had fieen forwarded to the Public Works Department for approval, and it was expected that tenders would be called in November. Irwin L. Ivaufpiann, attorney-at-law, San 1' ranciseo, representing the Triumph Steel Company, requested information regarding the possibilities of acquiring the use oi iron sand for steel manufacture. —No action was taken.
The Minister of Marine, the Hon. J. G. Anderson, acknowledged the resolution passed at the board’s previous meeting, containing appreciative references to the' assistance rendered by him and officers of Ins department. He conveyed to the board his thanks for the expressions of appreciation. The district engineer of the Railway Department, Wangnui, replied to the board’s request that he had no secondhand sleepers for sale, all on hand being required for departmental use. A motion congratulating the engineer, Mr. H. Vickerman, on being appointed to the committee of scientific research was passed. Accounts amounting to £1299 16s 6d on the interest account and £579 4s lid on the general account were passed for payment.
