BRITISH BETS OFF.
STRIKE OF BOOKMAKERS. PROTEST AGAINST GAMING BILL. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION COPYRIGHi LONDON, Nov. 3. Unprecedented scenes occurred at Windsor. The bookmakers of Tattersall’s ring, as a protest against the betting tax, refused to bet. A booing crowd surrounded a “bookie” who was attempting to lay odds, and he resisted. The majority of racegoers departed in disgust after the third race. 'Betting was carried on in smaller rings, but as Tattersall’s provides the official starting prices upon which off-course betting is based, all starting price bets were voided all over the country. Tattersall’s bookmakers passed a resolution refusing to bet to-morrow. Their action lias aroused a controversy. Some critics declare it is silly and wrong, but a leading bookmaker points out that the tax greatly reduced the attendance at Windsor, and there- were so few pnnters that the bookmakers were unable to make decent books. The risks of heavy losses were too great. Other people fear that, the Government will introduce totalisators if the players persist in not wagering.
