LABOUR GAINS
MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
IN ENGLISH BOROUGHS REVIEW OF THE POLLING. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, Nov. 2. The municipal elections in 300 English and Welsh boroughs, omitting London, resulted in large Labour gains in the 703 seats contested. The nett Labour and Socialist gains thus far are 139 seats, the Conservatives losing 69, Liberals 49, and Independents 21. The Socialists now control Leeds and Sheffield, and have also made ten gains in Stoke and seven in Manchester. Received 10.45 a.m. to-day. LONDON, Nov. 2. A review of the municipal elections shows that Labour gains in 50 large towns, including eight at Birmingham, seven at Manchester, and six at Liverpool. Mr Herbert Smith was elected for Barnsley. Labour had 807 candidates, of which 50 were unopposed and 350 were elected at the polls. The Conservatives had 569 candidates, of which 99 were unopposed and 338 elected at the polls. The Liberals had 291 candidates, of which 48 were elected unopposed and 115 elected at the polls. The Independents had 194 candidates, of which 43 were elected nnopnosed and 95 were elected at the polls.
