FRUIT SUPPLIES.

A DIFFICULT PERIOD. As is usual at this time of the yeax> fruit is fairly scarce,, and applet, the main item in the supply, are obtained from cool store. They are m goo* order, considering that this is near the end of the season. iSmall shipments are coming from (California, hilt they are dear. Other American, fruits —oranges and lemons—are landing regularly and are in excellent condition.. The oranges, of the same variety as from Australia, have generally much thinner skins and consequently are better eating. The Island oranges are just about done. Plentiful supplies of tomatoes are coming in from the Islands, and these are reaching the market in very good order. It seems probable that local supplies will be very late. While, in regard to stone fruits, reports state that the Central Otago crops have been badly cut by frosts, from Hawke’s Bay and Nelson come news that heavy crops of all kinds aro anticipated. It will of interest to learn that fruit people depend largely on Otago for apricots and on Hastings for peaches. This season’s strawberries have been on the market for some time in Auckland, but they are said to have been affected by the cold wet weather. The demand has also fallen off. Grapes are being imported from California in increasing quantities, and those received have reached here in excellent condition. The season is said to have been fully two weeks earlier * than usual. One importer who tried them out has met such success that he has already placed larger orders. iFresli season’s apples will not be here for some two months. The first of the fruits to arrive will probably be gooseberries, due some time this month. These will come mainly from Hawke’s Bay and Nelson.
