A Press Association message from London announces tlic death of Wilfred Flowers, an old Nottinghamshire cricketer.

Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., left for Wanganui this morning by the mail train, on 'business of a private nature.

Mr J. H. Hall, for the past two years editor of the Ha\vera Star,- has resigned that position as from the end of next month, in order to take up an important appointment in metropolitan journalism. Mr L. A. Ablett, first assistant sub-editor of the Christchurch Press, has been appointed editor of The Star, and will enter upon his duties in Hawera at the New Year. Mr Ablett has had a varied experience of newspaper work in the South Island, both city and provincial, having served on the Christchurch Sun and the North Otago Times (Oamaru) before joining the staff of the Press nearly six years ago. Also, he has been largely responsible for the literary direction of a. popular commercial monthly, published in Christchurch and circulating throughout the Dominion.

Oomrru ssioner Hay, who is .in charge of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, passed through Hawera this- morning on the mail train. The Commissioner l.s accompanied by his wife. Yesterday they were in Ellthain, and to-night a halt, will be made at Feilding. Commissioner Hay, in tihe course of a short conversation on the train with a. Star representative, gave a brief sketch of his activities since has arrival in the Dominion in September last. The Commissioner is rapidly making himself acquainted with his. territory, and contemplates other trips to Taranaki in the near future, when Hawera will he included in the itinerary. Commissioner Hay has a wide experience in Army work: He came to New Zealand from South, Africa, via, Australia,. His last command extended from Capetown to the Zambesi.
