PORT AT PATEA.

THE HARBOUR BOARD. MONTHLY MEETING. _______ * The monthly meeting of the Patea Harbour Board was held yesterday, when there were present: Alessrs A. Tl Christensen (chairman), J. R. Corrigan, W. H. Watkins, A. H. Hodge, and A. N’ Williams. Apologies were received from, and leave of absence granted to, Alessrs E A. Pacey, and A. Pearce. STATE OF THE CHANNEL. The harbourmaster and. pilot, Captain W. Tinney, reported that lor the month of October the channel was in good order, with about 13 feet on the bar, and the same between the walls at high water spring tides, and about nine feet at high water neap tides. Soundings were taken on October 14, when 12 feet between the walls and lo feet on the bar, with 7 feet showing on the oauge, was obtained. Tliere was still a shoal left outside the bar, but it was thought that it would work down to the eastward with fine weather. There had been 14 arrivals and 15 departures during the month. This was regarded as good, considering the bad weather experienced. Everything was in good order, and the sand grass planted near the walk was doing well. In moving the adoption of the report the chairman said that a little bank had formed outside the bar as a result of the recent fresh, but this did not interfere with shipping. Afr. Corrigan seconded and the motion was carried.

The dredgemaster, Air. Alex. Mercer, reported that the annual overhaul of the dredge was nearly completed, and it was hoped to dispose of the extra labour at the end of the present week. The dredge had been placed on the slip on October 5, and was inspected by Air. J. Townsend, inspector of machinery at Wanganui, two days later. The list of repairs which had been found necessary was thought to be surprisingly small. Freshes in the river interfered with the work that was required to the bottom, but it was hoped to refloat the dredge on Wednesday of this week. The inspector had appeared mystified in connection with a certain pitting which was.found in some of the plates of the dredge, and it was thought to be due to discharge water from the septic tank. Nothing serious was predicted, but the inspector suggested that the board should moor the vessel at a new berth for the next twelve months. The harbourmaster was assisted to sound the bar on October 14, when the pooiest sounding was three feet more than shown on tbe tide gauge. The chairman moved the adoption of the report, and in doing so said that he proposed to bring the matter of the out lei: from the septic tank being altered before the notice of the Borough Council. The report was adopted.

RAILWAY ADVISORY BOARDS. The Railway Department’s circular with regard to the institution of advisorv boards was received.

Tn explaining the scheme to the board members, the chairman said that it Was a good one, and moved that the board heartily endorse the suggestion.

Mr. Corrigan seconded, and «aid that the scheme provided for the commercialising of the railways, in order to bring them up to the standard that it was felt was required. Air. Watkins considered that the scheme was very good, and referred to the great improvement shown in the service in recent years. The staff had proved most obliging of late. The motion was carried. On the suggestion of Air. Corrigan, the chairman was given power to represent the board at any conference held in connection with the proposal. G ENERAL. The Patea manager of the Bank of New South AYales advised that a temporary advance of £ISOO by the board had been granted.—The necessary motion permitting the borlowing of the amount was carried. The chairman reported that at the bend above the bridge the river had eaten well into the bank during the recent floods. It was decided to watch the matter carefully, and a,s soon as possible to commence work with the dredge at this point. The action of the chairman in having the wharf repaired was confirmed. ■ The chairman stated that the rates had come in well during the month, over £BOO being collected.
