NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Maecenas.”) It is stated that J. Beale will i ide Taundoes in the New Zealand Cup. R. Reed gave an excellent display of horsemanship on Tatiadees, in the Mastevton Cup on Friday last. Queen’s Choice made his first appearance in open class when he competed in the Masterton Cup last week. Queen’s Choice lost much ground at the start, and even then was barely beaten. . Alter a long succession or defeats, Polyphemus was successful at Trentham last Friday. High Pitch was a runner in the Flying Handic-ao at the Masterton meeting on Friday last. He was neglected in the betting and ran accordingly, as thev say in Australia. The Egmont-trained Vaward and So von a ran good solid races at the Wellington meeting and also on the first day of the Masterton meeting, hut the class they encountered there was inst too good for them. Koniiau won the High-weiglit Handicap very easily last Friday, hut in a measure the easy win was due to the poor race Bagbv rode on Santiago. Baghy usually rides well, hut in this event he did not show his usual excellence.
Tnundoes was responsible for a good nerformance to win the Masterton Cup last, Friday, and his finishing run was a really good one. The gelding has bopn giving his trainer some trouble of late, and mav not he '•.Hie to do himself justice in the New Zealand Cun. L. G. Morris, who was operated on for apnendicitis last month, made a vcr>- rpii'k reenverv, and was riding again at the Masterton meeting last Fridav. He rode an excellent race to win on Glen Tnni= and nl=o finished a good second on Mint Leaf. Jazz Rahv clulv materialised in the Novice Stakes at' the Masterton meet-
ing, but as the class was very poor there was little merit in the win. In fact, had the moderate General been well placed entering the straight, he possibly may have beaten Jazz Baby.
After running indifferently for quite a long time, Oration showed a return to form by running a really good race in the big “sprint” at the Masterton meeting last Friday. With a. couple of chains to go Oration looked a certain winner, but he stopped quickly over the last few yards. The Masterton Racing Club’s meeting, held at Trentham last week, while not commanding the large attendance common to the gatherings of the Wellington Racing Club, was quite a, good meeting, and was really well patronised. As the result of the success, of the meeting, the Masterton . Racing Club will lie once more financial. The Australian-bred Welkne was supported from the right quarter for his race on the opening day of the Masterton meeting. He did not have any luck in the running, and did well to finish such a close second. Welkne is good, and is worth remembering for future races. . That Avola is far from a spent light was clearly demonstrated by her at the recent Wellington and Masterton meetings. Her finishing effort to beat Oration last Friday was a really brilliant one. as Avola gave Oration six lengths’ start- over the last half-furlong. / MANFRED WITHDRAWN. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT. SYDNEY, Nov. 1. The withdrawal of Manfred, who was the outstanding public fancy the Melbourne Cup, came as a sensational surprise. The scratching has hit the public heavily. NOTES FROM FLEMINGTON. MELBOURNE, Nov. 1. At Flemington to-day Valicare did a record half-mile gallop m Limerick cantered twice round and pulled up apparently well. At Caulfield Beedos did the best mile in lmin 47sec, Miss Disraeli taking lmin 47-Jsec. Manfred was scratched for the Melbourne Cup at 10.30 this morning. NEW ZEALAND' GUP MEETING THE ACCEPTANCES'. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 1. The following are the acceptances and final payments for the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, on Saturday next: —
TRAiNJLNG AT HAWEiIA. J’ I JACK AND STABLE GOSSIP. AI ild weather afforded ideal training ■ onditions on the Jlawera course tiiis morning, and a good number of local thoroughbreds were seen in exercise. Glengariff, San Fera, Ward a me, Lady Acre, Roman, and a Risogne two-year-old, all in charge of M. Conway, were out before six in working gallops on the plough. Benzora arid Lethal (O, Jackson) were given similar exercise. Whaizone, froni J. Fryer’s stable, and a full brother to Bisogne from C. Jackson’s teamj galloped three furlongs on the plough, finishing together in 3Ssec. Gold Collector, Tip Tree, Eka, and Lady Anstruther (J. Fryer) were exercise,! m pace work before tiie breakfast adjournment. Airtight, Rehntai, and Taitaiata worked at half-pace after breakfast. Te Kalia and Whakalvihi made a three furlong sprint on the plough, finishing together in 4Qsec.
Euchre (M. Conway) appeared to bo working well after a good spell. - A two-year-old colt by Gasbag—Baby Napper, being tutored by M. Conway, is a nice looking youngster. In pace work on the plough Monaghan looked none the worse for his strenuous performances at Waverley. A promising two-year-old gelding, Silvermine, by Catmint —Silver Link, being trained by J. Brown, finished well in front of a two-year-old, Ecione, at the conclusion of half-a-mile on the outside of the course in 55sec. Seastar seemed fresh, with no reluctance to resume work, after a lengthy rest. * The Lamb, in charge of R. J. Flower, who is to ride the gelding at the Auckland meeting, leaves by the midday train for New Plymouth, and is to proceed north by to-night’s boat. Maurice Conway, who sustained a nasty fall with Roman in the Westholm Hurdles at Waverley, was discharged from the Patea hospital yesterday. He was an interested onlooker on the track this morning, but will not be able to resume riding for three weeks or a month. The mishap was his thft-d this year, and it is sincerely hoped it- will prove the unlucky last.
