NOTES AND COMMENTS.
(By “Maecenas.”) The only rac-e meeting to be held this week is that of the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club, on Saturday next. Although the fields in many of the races at Carterton on. Saturday last were of very limited size, the club had much better finanaci'l results than it expected. The Carterton Racing Club has only a- one-day permit, but such limited scope lias not prevented the club from having up-to-date appointments and course. Just recently tide country ciuh erected a new totalisator house costing £llOO. L. G. Morris is making a quick recovery from Iris operation, and w ll he seen in the saddle at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. Vesper us was backed at Carterton on Saturday as if unbeatable, but he bad to be hard ridden by R. Hag by to beat the moderate Hokioi. Although Buck Days had to strike her colours to Gourmet at the Carterton meeting on Saturday last, her pcrfoimance was a good one. She met with interference at barrier lise tbit cost her .many lengths, and was then only beaten bv a nose. The Taranaki-trained Vivo was heavily supported for the Carterton Hack on Saturday, but had a very bad run,
eventually finishing well in fourth place. Bay Dighton met a poor lot in the Maungaraki Handicap at Mr© Carterton meeting, but even then could only finish fifth. But had in-: rider rot covered such a lot of ground at the straight entrance, Bay Dighton may have paid a dividend. Grand: Knight met with an accident last week which, however, v as slight, and may not prevent the. English-bred horse from starting in ’ b<> Champion Plate at Trentham on Monday next. Grand Knight appears in the papers as an acceptor for the first day of the Wellington meeting, but I understand he was not accepted for, his name appearing bv error. Merry Day had every chance against the poor field that opposed her at the Carterton meeting on Saturday last, but is evidently a back number. anticipated, Polonaise proved at Carterton that her second day’s form at Otaki was wrong. Even on Saturday Polonaise gave Note mid others half a dozen lengths’ start over the last two furlongs, and then wort nicely. She is fast, hut, despite her breeding, may not stay. After winning at the recent Otaki meeting, the joint owners of Black Mint were offered the good price of £6OO by Mr. E. Riddiford for the gelding. One of the partners was prepared to accept the offer, but the other would not entertain it. After his poor showing at the recent Otaki meeting, trainer F. Tilley and owner T. Duncan decided to sell the high-strung Bonhomme, and he was bought- by Air. Stan bridge, owner of First Line and Asleep. In future Bonhonime wiil be trained at Otaki by D. Webster.
After competing in the Maungaraki Welter at the Carterton meeting on Saturday last, Tempean took charge of his rider, P. Burgess, and careered madly down the course, but was eventually pulled up. He then bounded off again! and, after going half a mile, raced straight at a fence that divides the course from the road, and. falling, gave his rider a nasty fall. Burgess was sent to hospital suffering from slight concussion and a bruised shoulder.
Evidently the owner-trainer of Degage has designs on the New Zealand Cup with this fine mart, as he was very anxious to know whether Degage would incur a rehandioap for the New Zealand Cup if successful in the Champion Plate at the coming Wellington meeting. The penalty conditions attached to the Now' Zealand Cup iread : “The winner of any race of the value of £4400 after declaration of the weights, or race or races totalling £SOO in value, shall he liable to rehandicap.” This, of course, would make it appear that- the winner of the Champion Plate (worth £BSO to the winner) must certainly be rehandicapped ; but although the opinions of various prominent racing men have been sought, they have not been unanimous on just whether the winner at TrenHiam can he penalised. Personally, I contend that rule 7, part 18, in the Rules of Racing, overrides any special conditions inserted by the club. This rule clearly states that no horse shall carry extra weight in a handicap in consequence of having won a weight-for-nge race. Surely this is clear enough.
