Leo Quin, of Eltliam, had a runaway win from Tucker, and is reported to be playing in his very best form. The sensation of the day was the defeat of Ross, the Otago champion, by Bid well, who only just qualified after a play-off. But the latter is a renowned match player, and is quite likely to go a long way still. It is remarkable that for three years the leading amateur has succumbed to the lowest oi the thirty-two. In the first round two years ago at Auckland, R. O. Gardner, the last to qualify., defeated A. Duncan in the first lound. The same thing happened at Christchurch last year, Eric Scott defeating E. Maci'ar’ane, and now J. C. Bidwell, after a play-off to qualify for the last place, which he won by one stroke, has defeated Dr. Ross, who was so prominent in the open. This ivas the gallery match of the day. The first 18 ho'es were even, Ross being 1 up. Bidwell soon reduced this lead, and, playing excellent golt, gradually drew away from the doctor and finally won 3 and 2. Bidwell. on to-day’s play, is back to the form lie showed at Wanganui. A great struggle took place between J. L. B : ack and D. Grant, when, after the former was four up at the fifth, his opponent squared at the 10th. The same keen struggle continued in the afternoon, and Grant took Black to th© 38th hole, and was then beaten only on a “stymie.” H. J. Shanks played good golf against Hector Morrison, and was I up at lunch, a position he held up to the 32nd ho’o. Then Morrison got busy, and, sinking two dandy putts at the 33rd and 34th, and winning the 35th, gave him the match. More will be heard of Morrison. J. B. Parker owes his win over Sime. to his deadly mashie play and good putting. E. M. Macfarlane had a comfortable win from his old club mate, M. MaeBeth, and seems more at home on the course to-day than he has heen. B. V. Wright played two excellent rounds, showing good form. He beat H. Black, who finished 14 strokes ahead of him in the open. Crosse was always up on Drake till the 27th. when Drake wore him down after a hard game. . Arthur Duncan “buried” the visiting Sydney player, Dr. Jones, and is evidently in great form. N. Bell, of Hamilton, put out a strong opponent in A. E. Conway by a wide margin. THE PROFESSIONALS.

In the Moss v. T. Galloway match, Galloway made an effort to reduce Moss’ lead, which lie succeeded in doing at the 25th hole, but Moss, taking the 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th and halving the 13th. won the match by 4 up and 3. In th© Shaw v. J. R. Galloway match Shaw was 5 up at the 30th hole. Galloway took the 32rid and the 33rd, Shaw winning the next and the match. In the Mclntosh v. Clements match, Mclntosh played much steadier golf and was always in the lead. He is ri"ht ni> to his hest- forTn, and will make tilings interesting in the professional championship. Blair, against Butters, established a lead of 3 up in the morning round after a ding-dong go. They were all square at the 36th. At this hole Blair lay Butters a lovely stymie, hut Butters was equal to the occasion. Taking his mashie. he produced a spectacular shot and negotiated the stymie. Blair won the 37th with a good 4.
