FARMING COMPETITIONS
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING
The executive I committee of the South Taranaki Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs met at Hawera on Saturday. There were present: Messrs 11. Hodge (chairman), it. Syme, G. T. Francis, A J. Glasson, J. Dakers, E. J. Betts, D. M. Cameron, W. M. DillMacky, T. Innes, C. V. Smith, and E. K. Cameron (secretary). The secretary presented a revised list of entries in the coming season’s competitions for primary school pupils, showing totals of 133, 114, and 275 respectively in the carrot growing, mangold growing, and calf rearing Details and entries from the various schools were as follow, the figures following the name of the school denoting the respective totals in the three classes in.the order named: Ackland, —, —, 8; Ararata, 1,1, 2; Auroa, 10, 7, 23; Awatuna, —, 5,7; Cardiff, 7, 1,9; Douglas, 1,1, 10; Finnerty Road, 2, —, 6; Haw'era, —, —, 1; Huiroa, 2,2, 8; Kaponga, 7,2, 10; Kapuni, —; —, 5; Mahoe, —, —, 4; Manaia State, 3,3, 11; Mangahume, 2,1, 2; Mangatoki, —, 1,7; Matapu, 9, 12, 17; Midhirst, 5,1, 7; Miokoia, 2,3, 2; Ngaere, 5,5, 5; Normanby, 4,5, 6; o'eo, —, 3,4; Ohangai, 7, G, 9; Okaiawa, 10, 7, IS; Opunake, —, —, 9; Otakeho, 4,3, G; Pembroke, 1, —, 7; Pukengahu, 4,4, 3; Rawhitiroa, 3,6, 10; Riverlea, 3,2, 9; Rowan, 3,3, s;' Stanley, 3,2, 8; Stratford Primary, 12, 8, 10; Tawhiti, —, —, 1; Te Kiri, 3,2, 8; Te Roti, 1,5, 8; Tokaora, 4,2, 3; Toko, 11, 11, 5; Wluireroa, —, —, 2; Tuna. 4, —, Mr Dill-Cracky reported that eight calf-rearipg entries had been contemplated from the Makaka school, but owing to a misunderstanding concerning the entry forms the nominations had not been forwarded. —It was intimated' that these entries, if forwarded by Wednesday, October 13, would bo ' accepted. Approval was expressed of the manner in which details of entries had hcen given as a whole, bat it was pointed out that, in a few individual eases, trouble to the secretary was caused by irregularity in filling in the forms. Some diffiuclty was met by Mr Glasson in arranging a. supply of seeds and. manures owing to alteration of the original entries. The chairman pointed out tha t teachers could assist'in l this direction by ensuring that the forms were fully completed, .signifying definitely the entries in the different competitions.
Arising from an inquiry, it was resolved that competitors in the calfrearing competition would not he allowed more than one entry in each class. s SENIOR DIVISIONThe secretary reported that to date the entries iti the senior division carrot and mangold growing competitions totalled 16 and 12 respectively. These had been received from, six districts, as follow: —Kaupokonui, o—6; Auroa, 3—3 : Awatiina, 2 —o; Oeo 1—0; Qkaiawa. I—l ; Ohangai, 3—2. Referring to the senior division, Mr Dakers expressed the opinion that it was already arousing much interest among ex-school pupils up to 18 years of age, and the entries could be expected to be considerably augmented as the competitions became more widely known. The senior division second chart, prepared bv Mr Syme. and providing for 'details as to cultivation, manuring, costs and judging in root-growing competitions. was adopted. Tt was decided that a maximum of 1.6 points he allowed for keeping the chart. Mr Smith suggested that the system of allowin'? a maximum award: . f 50 |H>ints for keeping iunior charts in i*oot-growing competitions bo- amended so as to allow the award of 20 points for the chart itself , and 30 mints for award on a test of. the 'competitor’s knowledge of the .growing of the c op. He pointed out that the tatter test could 1>(. decided by a series of or.nations out-b" the judge and graded to the respective capabilities oif competitors in the different standards. After, some discussion, the secretary and Messrs Syme and Smith were anno in ted to bring forward a report on the matter at the ensuing meeting. On the suggestion of Air Syme it was decided to furnish certificates ol record to winners of chamnionsbins. and also of first, second and third nrize* in the past season’s, competitions.
