William Johnston, a former national tenuis champion, has refused the offer of Mr. Pvle to turn professional. NEW YORK, Oct. 4. Coastguard officials state that after unloading a cargo of 2000 cases of liquor the British steam trawler Penlinden sailed from Halifax on August 18 for an unnamed destination, and was seized at Bay way, New Jersey, on Saturday night, when the crew fled. Japan has ordered a fleet of Blackbur n-Nhpier torpedo planes, each carrying a torpedo weighing a ton, and capable of being carried on the deck of a battleship. LONDON, Oct. 4.

IvOjNDON, Oct. 4James Forster Green, aged 82, was found dead in his house at Gateshead, where he had lived as a recluse for 20 years. Dr. Stresemann’s recent allusions to the war guilt of Germany have incensed the French press, which perceives therein an attempt to set M. Briand (Foreign Minister) against the Premier (M. Poincare). Le Journal Des Debats demands a public discussion before the signing of an agreement with Germany. LONDON, Oct. 4. The Archbishop of Canterbury, defining his attitude towards birth control, concerning which misleading reports have been published, declares that it is true that he declined to denounce as necessarily sinful all and every method of birth control. Circumstances might arise in which a blunt denunciation would be unfair and misleading. He did. however, denounce as lamentable and mischievous the advice of the group headed by Dr. Marie R topes.
