In an hour and a half seven inches of min fell. The torrent from the mountain behind the town carried everything before it, flooded all business places along, the waterfront, smashed two concrete bridges in the main street and rendered the water supply useless. It smashed two walls surrounding the baths, and many premises were flooded, from two to four feet deep. Municipal property was damaged to the extent of £SOOO. The Burns Philp Company estimates its loss at £3OOO. Many, houses were damaged. Altogether, five bridges were washed away. During the v downpour most of the residents went about in shorts and bathing costumes. Tlie total damage is estimated *.t £IO,OOO.
