ESTEEMED SETTLER PASSES.

MR RICHARD HUGHES. (From Our Manaia Correspondent.) The high esteem in, which the late Mr Richard Hughes, of Kapuni, was held during his many years of residence in Taranaki was manifested by the large number of relatives and friends from all parts of the province who assembled for the funeral ceremony on Friday. Over 70 cars, each carrying from three to seven sympathisers, took part in the procession, the gathering being one of the largest of its kind which has been known in) the history of the district. Among the visitors was Mr Enoch Hughes, of New South Wales, who arrived on a visit just prior to the death of his brother. The service at the - graveside! in the Manaia cemetery was conducted by the Rev. Mr Orchard, of Manaia, who also officiated at the service held before the cortege left the - residence at Kapuni. The pall-bearers were Messrs C. Murdoch, J. Paterson, C. Hunger, *W. Gulliver, W. Hackett and J. A. G. Cosgrove. Many beautiful wreaths were placed on the casket. The late Mr Hughes was horn in Holyhead, Wales, and at the age «of two years came out with his parents to live in Victoria. He was brought up in Greta, and became noted' as one of the best ploughmen of the State. At the age of 13 years he won his first ploughing competition against allcomers under 20 years of age. Two years later he won the open championship at Moyhu, and afterwards won many prizes, being well tutored by his father, who in his day ' won many similar championships. As a boy and young man lie rode with success on Various Australian tracks for his father, who was one of the foremost breeders of thoroughbreds in Australia, his horses including: Pauling, Cymro, Flying Arrow, Tommy Dodd. iShaddow Lando.' First Arthur, Lady Peel, Martyr, Blodwyn, Sweep Clean. Lady Willoughby, Bright Ore and Queen Mary. His nominees were successful in many of the principal horse racing events in Australia.. Hi® stud horses included: King Arthur. MiJdlemaroli and Dauntless. The deceased a few years' ago went over to Australia' to attend his parents’ golden wedding, at which four venerations of the family were present. The gathering was said to he the largest of its kind ever held at Greta. The parents have since passed away. The late Mr Hughes leaves a widow, four, sons and five daughter®. The sons axe

William (Oeo), Fred (Auroa), James (Ararata), Albert (Kapuni), and the daughters are Mesdames C. Evans (Auroa), D. Barlow (Auroa), A. Kruse (Auroa). H. Whalen (Kapuni), and Miss Flossie (Kapuni). He had five brothers, Messrs John, Rowley, Enoch, Robert and Isaac, and one sistar, Mrs J. Bowen, all resident in Australia.
