Local members of, Parliament have sent the following wire to the Acting Prime Minister: —“Whilst appreciating your telegram that additional 1 ; men would be employed on Portobello road, the position disclosed show's that the situation is acute and likely to he accentuated owing to the City Council having discharged an Additional hundred ' men. The council has expended £50,000 during the past six months, thereby giving employment to over 300 men, but its funds 'are now exhausted, and we urge the Government to render further help in meeting the situation. The citizens have done their utmost to meet the conditions, but the funds are now overdrawn by nearly £5000.”
