DROWNED WHILE RESCUING 'SHEEP.

News received here indicates that roads along the coast are blocked in places and connection with Motu has been severed. The rivers are in high flood. The weather is very warm, but still unsettled. THREE HORSES ELECTROCUTED. WAIROA, Oct. 4. On Saturday afternoon three valuable horses belonging to Mr J. Boyle, & contractor, were electrocuted near Waikaremoana power house. A team was engaged in shifting a small store, when the roof came into contact with Electric .wires overhead, the current immediately killing three horses on the side nearest to the wire. The others were not touched. CAR CAPSIZED. WAIROA, Oct. 4. A c«r owned and driven by Mr W. Compton, of Frasertown, owing to failure of brakes, capsized l into the river near Taheke station, Waikaremoana, when) coming into town from the power-house with several employees of the Public Works Department on Sftturdav afternoon The occupants were not hurt, but had a marvellous escape, just managing to get out of the oar, which was under water.. The car was considerably damaged. FIRE AT PUKEKOHE. PUKEKO'HE, Oct. 4. At three o’clock on Sunday morning fire completely destroyed G. H. Armstrong’s bakehouse and partially gutted the .same owner’s fruit and confectionery premises in the same building. The brigade effected a remarkable save and confined the flames to the rear portion. The insurances on Armstrong’s plant; fittings _ and stock amounted to £685. The building, which was owned by the estate of H. J. Lodge, was insured for £IOOO. SHIFT ENGINEER KILLED. WAIPUKURAU, Oct. 4. Timothy John Downing, aged 40, a shift- engineer at the Waipukuxau Borough Council’s pumping station,, was killed at half-past eight o’clock this morning. He had evidently used a steel bar, which became entangled, in the clutch of the pump and, being propeled .around, split llijs bead in two. Death was instantaneous. His fellow engineer came into the pumping room immediately and saw Downing lying up the floor dead. He leaves a widow and a child a week old. FOUND HANGING. AUCKLAND, Oct. 4. Hubert Harrison (40), a. widower, was found hanging in a garage on McKenzie road, Mangere, this morning. MINER FOUND DEAD. INVERCARGILL, Oct. 4. Anthony F. Francis, aged 39, a married man, a miner employed by the Linton Company, was found dead in a section of the old workings. It is presumed the deceased was overcome by fumes. He leaves a, widow and fonr children. ANOTHER MOTOR, ACCIDENT. ~WAIROA, Oct. 4. An accident occurred this morning on the Nuhaka road, about a mile past the Tahaenui bridge, -when the Gisborne Motor Company’s service car, owing to the breaking of am axle, missed a culvert at a bend, struck a telegraph pole, and* overturned. The car was considerably damaged, but the passengers fortunately escaped with a severe shaking. A MAN MISSING. THAMES. Oct. 4.

The police received 1 a telegram this morning from Constable Cannon, of Whitianga, that Robert Pitman. a farm hand of Cora glen, who has been missing since 6 p.m. on October 2. was believed to he drowned while crossing a ford at Coroglen. A search party is now out dragging the river. FEUL ON THE' RAILWAY LINE. PALMERSTON N., Oct. 4. Sebastan -Helena, an elderly man living at Terrace End, who was found on the railway line on Saturday stunned and injured, died at the hosoitnl last night. Though two trains had passed prior to the discovery of Hulena, it is not believed he was struck by either, but .that he fell when crossing the line, striking his head on the rails.
