CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
of Commerce held its monthly meeting on Friday evening. The president (Mr J. S. Wilson) occupied, the chair, and other present were: Messrs Mar ton, Clare, Carroll, Ricketts, Bridger, and the secretary, Mr S. ProsrJ'he president stated that he had received the resignation of Mr J. Carrol 1 , who was leaving to take up a position in Waitara. He sincerely regretted the loss of : Mr Carroll from the executive committee, a® he hcd orovod ■ a verv useful member. On behalf of the chamber, he wished Mr Carrolil success in his new position. It was decided to place on recot cl the oounoil’s appreciation of the valuable service rendered to the chamber by Mr Carroll. , , ~ Mr Carroll briefly thanked] the president and l tlm x.-ouncil for its expression of goodwill. BRITISH TRADE WEEK. The secretary reported that arrangements had been made with the drapers of the town, to conduct an Empire shop ping week f rom the 4th to the 9th inst., at which a special display of British goods would lie made. The. Stratford Progress League wrote asking the chamber to support a request that the Government be urged to place a larger sum than had been allotted for the completion of the Stratford railway line, viz., £IBO,OOO. Members expressed the opinion that the Government realised the importance of the line and no doubt had granted as much as possible for . the purpose of completion.—The letter was received. The nighfcwatchman (Mr J. Irons) reported that during the month of August there' were 22 defaulters in the business area. Two motor-cars had heen detained. Several motor-cyclists had been warned for breaches of the borough by-laws. LAKE ROTOKARE RESERVE, Replying to a communication forwarded by the chamber, the Minister of Lands, the Hon. A. D. McLeod, stated that as ,s_oon as the boundary fences were put in order he woui'Jd arrange for a public meeting to be called for the purpose of setting up a _ board to control the reserve. The Minister also .mentioned that the local board, when formed, would also. be responsible for raising money for keeping the reserve in order. Mr Bridger explained that the reason the former board 'resigned was that it found itself personally liable for the cost of replacing the boundary fences, which had become defective. The same difficulty would present itself _ again with regard to a new T board. It was impossible, ini its present of development, to earn any revenue for the reserve. . It was decided, on the motion ol Messes Marton and Ricketts, to communicate again with the Minister, pointing out the difficulty referred to. CRICKET CLUB. The management committee of the club met on Friday night to decide matters in connection with the coming season’s play. After a report had boon, received, it welsi •decided to oirfcei •only one junior team this season, it being pointed out that, while there would be enough player® for two teams, it was better to. have a surplus of players on which to draw in selecting teams for the various games. * Messrs L. Phillips and W. W. Avery were nominated as umpires for the season. , „ The matter of purchase of new equipment *was left to the secretary, Mr C. Ansford. 1 _ , , It was decided' to forward the names of defaulters in payment of membership fees to the Provincial Executive for record.
