The Hawera Star.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1926. ECONOMY IN HIGH PLACES.

Delivered every evening by 5 o’clock in Hawera, M&naia, Normanby, Okaiawa, Elthara, Mangatbki. Kapoiiga, Alton, - Hurleyville, Patea, Waverley Molioia, Whakamara, Ohangai, Meremere, Fraser Koad and Ararats.

'Certain regrets, inseparable from eontemplation of the delay which must now occur in‘the completion of the new Parliamentary Buildings, will be swamped by a wave of satisfaction that the fT.on. K. S. Williams has shown a determination to practise what, he preaches. The decision of the Minister, made public on Saturday, that the time is inexpedient to proceed with the construction of the last wing of the marble building; and the announcement that he has authorised instead an expenditure of £2700 in renovating the present wooden wing—at one time Government House —so that it will last “ for many years to come, ’’ will be welcomed especially by those taxpayers who are faced with the necessity of having to exercise more or loss drastic economy in their private living in order to meet the straitened times prophesied. Money sunk in completing the Houses of Parliament according to the long-standing plans would not be wasted, but neither could it. be regarded as an investment of first-class productiveness —the Legislature being able to discharge its duties without inconvenience in the present premises-r-and the Minister is right in his view that the money available could be expended much more profitably to the country i»» other directions. He has indicated that, what he has particularly in mind is a staving off of costly building for the next couple of years; but if the old building is to be repainted—and it would be a disgrace to Wellington to leave it there longer without repainting—and otherwise preserved, it may be possible not merely to make it tide over the lean years, but. to give service until the surplus from fat years definitely entitles the Government of the day to spend the big sum which will be necessary to . complete the stately block.
