Garland, who was found dead in his office 011 September 14, it was -stated that the day before he •died Garland failed to. keep several business appointments and went motoring al day. In his car was found a copy of ‘“Tales of Illusion,” and on a leaf was the following note in nis handwriting: “To many it must be a disappointment, to none more t-lian to myself. I do not know why I could- not have been taken during the war instead of being left to bring misery to many as a result of my folly. . Mi- Knight, a public accountant, .said that three months ago Garland had asked him to establish for him A -system of keeping accounts. Previously ho had not even a cash book. He had a large overdraft, but that was guaranteed by one of liis friends. He was not so'.vent, and must have had- considerable financial worry. Witness knew one association had entrusted Garland with £SOOO for investment in -debentures-. He used that to take- the place of •capital he did not possess, iliere was also a sum of £IOOO which witness believed was the cause of _his act. It was given, to him to invest -in inscribed stock, which he did not do. That, together with the fact that the bank was pressing him to reduce his overdraft-, or lodge- .security again-st at, and that the guarantor had asked for Garland’s guarantee to be withdrawn, was the immediate cause of Garland s financial worries. His papers showed that .he was £3300 out, exclusive' of private debts add inabilities. ' .. , £ • The coroner found n verdict ot suicide.
