The Maori Jimmy Woereta, who broke out of th© Terrace gaol on July 23rd, was sentenced' to-day to twelve months’ imprisonment for theft of the motor-cycle "on which he had been riding about the country for three months. Th© original sentence was two years’ reformative treatment for.theft, forging and uttering.
SUPREAIE COURT AT WELLINGTON.
WELLINGTON, Sept. 30. The. following prisoners ' were sentenced by Mr. Justice Sim: George Hutcheson Lang (4o), who pleaded guilty to a charge of thett as a Government servant at Palmerston North, was sentenced to three yearsreformative treatment. Lang stated from the dock that from the newspaper report of the proceedings in the lower court it might possibly be construed that be had criticised the administration of the Justice Department He had no intention of criticising the administration. He would like to make the statement, because he thought the newspaper report might give another impression. , , Raymond Dundas Gordon (18). toi forgery and uttering, was ordered ,three years’ detention at the Borstal Ellis Edwards (23), .for Freaking, entering, and theft, received (three years’ reformative treatment.
CASES' AT MARTON
MAIR.TON. Sept. 30. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning William John Quinn for theft n. cigarettes valued at 30s from; Barton . grocery on Monday, was sentenced to one month without hard labour. James Andrew Thompson for theft of a watch and money valued at £4 15 from; a residence near Marton, was sentenced to fourteen days’ hard, labour. On a charge of, theft of a bicycle at Palmerston North, he was remanded to appear there.
