SELLING LOW-STANDARD MILK

(BY lELEQRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION./ HASTINGS, Sept. 29. This morning George Hagen, milkvendor, was charged with not complying with the standard required by the Act, having sold milk with 12 per cent, of added water. It was shown that when defendant was selling milk from his own cows, the supply was all right, but when his cows were turned out he got his supply from another farmer, selling it as it was received. The Magistrate said it was defendant’s duty to satisfy himself that the milk was up to standard. Only for the circumstances he would impose a fine of £25 or £3O, but in view of the facts he inflicted a- penalty of £lO and costs. EX-SOLICITOR RECEIVES TWO YEARS. AUCKLAND, Sept. 29. . Henry Karo Emanuel (25), an exsolicitor who had pleaded guilty to forgeries and theft involving £6OOO, was sentenced at the Supreme Court to two years’ hard labour, to be followed by three years’ i*eformative treatment. Mr. Justice Herdman characterised the crimes as . besmirching a great profession and lowering Emanuel to the level of a- common swindler. DRANK METHYLATED SPIRITS. (, PALMERSTON N., Sept. .29. “This man is a methylated spii-its addict. When he was arrested he had im his possession half a bottle of methylated spirits,” stated Senior Sergeatn O’Grady, when a man named Crozier appeared at the- Police Court this morning charged with helpless drunkenness. The J.P. imposed a fine of £5, remarking: “If you. take the alternative of 14 days, it will give yon time to sober up a little.” . WOOL THIEF. SENTENCED. For the theft at Taiha-pe of 1401'bs of. wool, valued a.t. £7 10s, tbe property of Belli, 60 lbs of wool and one wool pack, valued at £3 15s. the property of McOarten, William James Tasman Morris, labourer, aged 21, was to-day sentenced by Mr. Page, S.M.. to three months’ hard labour on each charge, the sentences to he concurrent and tn be served on the expiration of present term of twelve months’ reformative treatment imposed for another ci-rme.
