A ZOO TRAGEDY. IBY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. 3 AUCKLAND, Sept. 29. A baby hippopotamus which was born at the zoo yesterday could not be found this morning, but mangled remains under the male parent led to the conclusion that the monster had devoured the infant. DROWNED AT SEA. AUCKLAND, Sept. 29. At the inquest on the circumstances surrounding the death of Charles W. Coleman, a horse trainer who disappeared from the s.s. Rarawa between New Plymouth and Onehunga on September 1, Mr McKean, the coroner, said there was no evidence of suicide. Coleman was drowned at sea, but no one saw him leave the ship or how he got into the water. He returned a verdict accordingly. >. J searceTfor. oil. > GISBORNE, Sept. 29. /■' Teh Taranaki Oil Company’s well at Ruatorea is now down over 2000 feet, and with the information obtained by geologists from this bore the company now proposes to put down another well close to Tokomaru Bay. Since berthing at Queen’s wharf, the captain and crew have received many greetings and congratulations. The captain said that none, of the crew suffered any great privation. It was the mental anguish of the affair which affected them most. No one went short of food.
