SECONDARY EDUCATION.
HAWERA HIGH SCHOOL
MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Hawera High School Board was held: ilast evening, when there were present: Messrs R. S. Sage (chairman), A. Lees, VV. Crompton, J. Gray, T. C. Hobbs, J. \\ . Harding, W. Entwhistle, Mrs J. W. Handing, and the headmaster, Mr A. Gray. A general discussion on the finishing of the concrete fence being elected outside the .school arose out of the minutes, and it was decided that the inside of the fence should be smooth plaster, and that sin all caps be placed on the posts of the fence, raising them above the level of the fence. The headmaster, Mr A. Gray, reported as follows: —School resumed on the 14th inst. During the holidays the first Rugby fifteen visited Feilding,, and were most hospitab'y entertained by Feilding parents. We are expecting a cricket team from that town some time this season. Water in Furnace Room. —Mr A. Morrison reports that a pump can be procured locally, which he thinks would serve the purpose. The oost is 39s 6d. Our thanks are due to Mr Morrison for bis advice and help over this matter. We have received ft. donation of a motor starter from Messrs Turnbull and Jones, of Wellington. This has been added to the apparatus in the engineering department. The report was received, votes of thanks being .accorded to Messrs Morrison and Turnbull and Jones. At the previous meeting of the board the secretary was instructed to approach the local postmaster with a view to securing a reduction from the telephone. charge to bring it down to the private rate. Th e secretary. reported that the postmaster had. advised, after communication with the Chief Postmaster thftt institutions that charged ft fee snouldr pay the business rate. _ It was decided to draw th© attention of the Postmaster-General to the matter, and further apply for a reduction si mifnr to that grftnted to primary schools.
The difficulties encountered as a result of the oookery and 1 home science class rooms being separate from the school were stressed by the headmaster, and it was decided, to further press the application to the Department for a home science wing at the school. It was decided to invite quotations for a lawn-mower for the purpose of keeping the newfy-lftid lawn in order.
