USE BRITISH GOODS.

HAWERA WINTER SHOW

COMMENT FROM 1 SHEFFIELD, PAPER,

There has been received in Hawera an extract .from the Sheffield Telegraph of August 11, referring to the British goods exhibition at the Hawera Winter Show, and received from Mr. H. T. B. Drew, of the New Zealand Publicity Department in London by Mr. L.' 0. Hooker. The article is headed significantly “New Zealand Loyalty: Propaganda to: Promote Empire Trade,” and the writer says,*inter alia: “Tlujt the people of New Zealand are still; loyal to the Mother Country is proved by the manner in which they are at the present time endeavouring to influence the sale of British goods in that far-off colony. At an exhibition held some little time ago at Hawera, Taranaki, all the documents sent out from the exhibition were marked ‘Trade within the Empire means prosperity to New Zealand,’ and on each document was pasted a prettilydesigned stamp, on which was printed the words, ‘Buy more British goods.’ Moreover,' thousands of blotters were given away, on which was a design of the Union Jack, with, the words ‘British Trade’ printed across. Each blotter contained a brief and pungent argument in favour of the British goods campaign.” Visitors to the show will recall the wording on these blotters, etc., stressing the amount Britain, had to pay to America daily for 62 years, and how every ourchaser from her lightens the load' and also the fact that whereas America imposed a heavy duty on New Zealand butter, England welcomed it free of duty. . / , . - The article in question concludes by stating that “copies of these interesting documents were sent to a- Sheffield gentleman who has a son in New _Zealand and many other local citizens who 3 have friends in that colony will he interested to know that so much is being done in favour of the sale ot British manufactures.” • . ' It will be of interest to the people of the town and district to read the remarks from Sheffield and to. know that the fame of Hawera and the c,Q U th Taranaki Winter Show isgainiim more and more publicity at Home in’one of the busiest jmd largest centres of population, m the Old Land,
