CHARGE AGAINST MAORI

STORY OF DESPERATE STRUGGLE

(BY TELEGRAPH PKEBS ASSOCIATION.) WAIPAWA, Sept. 28.

A Maori youth, Hori Ngatoro, was committed for trial to-day on a charge of attempting to ' murder an. elderly man, Edward Grace Watts, at Otane on September 6. Accused, in a signed statement to the police, admitted entering Watts’ house • during the latter’s absence. After taking food he lay down on a lied, where he was surprised by Watts. According to accused, Watts punched him first and they closed. Both shots of the gun were fired during the struggle for possession of the weapon, one entering Watts’ left arm and side. The evidence of Watts went to show that as soon as he opened the bedroom door accused fired at him point blank. The second shot went off during the struggle.
