ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent) SCOUTS AND GUIDES. The combined Scouts and Girl Guides Committee at- Eltham met- last- night. Those present were Mr. I. J. Bridger (chairman), Mesdnmes Burke, Gower, Hilmer, and Mrs R. Foord (captain of fho Guides), Messrs Gower, Burke and S. Cooper (assistant scoutmaster). Apologies were received from Rev. W. \V. Avery, Rev. Mr Isaacson, and the secretary' (Mr R. Harrison). GIRL GUIDES. Mrs Foord reported as follows: Our work has been going on steadily during the past month. We have several new members, who hying our numbers to 20 Guides and 14 Brownies. . A number more are coming as the better weather arrives. The girls are hoping to soon have a gramophone, which will greatly help our meetings. I have pleasure in stating that the Horticultural Society kindly allowed us to do the catering at its spring show oji Wednesday last, the takings from which will benefit our funds to the extent of £B. As the tennis season has now opened, it Avould he of great benefit to the girls if the court in the park were put in order for play, and I would respectfully ask this committee to endeavour to have arrangements made to have the work done as soon as possible. On Sunday last, September 26, a muster of 11 girls attended the church parade at' the Salvation Army Hall. I beg to; report that I have received definite instructions from the Taranaki Provincial Committee at New Plymouth that it is absolutely necessary to have an - entirely separate committee of ladies to take charge of and carry on the organisation and work of the Guides of the Eltham company. \ It was decided to purchase a tennis net for the Guides’ use at the Park. The matter of arranging for the use of the court was left in. the hands of Airs Foord and the chairman. A letter was received' from; the Taranaki executive of the 'Girl Guides Provnieiaj, Committee, requesting that a committee be set up to especially control the Guide movement in Brchaim, similar to all other parts of New Zealand. The chairman explained t&at the Scout movement and fit© Girl Guide movement had been controlled for sevlera! years by a combined committee, and everything had worked satisfactory and progress had been t made during the period. Now, without a word of appreciation of the committee’s work and energy, a- request was made for a separate committee. The chairman said that he did not object to the setting up of a separate committee, but certainly objected to the. manner in which the request was made. . He stressed the urgent need for a representative Taranaki executive committee, instead of one comprised only of New Plymouth people. He then moved the following motion, which was seconded by Mr M. Burke and carried. “That this combined Taranaki Girl Guides and Boy Scouts committee agree to the setting up of a .separate committee for the control and management of the local branch of the Girl Guide movement in- conformity with, the genera l *, policy adopted by the heaquarters of the Girl Guide Association.” BOY SCOUTS.

The scoutmaster (Mr J. Rogers) reported a« follows: —Considerable progress has been made with the Scouts’ badge Avork during the past month. Several'Scouts have passed their tenderfoot and second-class tests, five had passed the pathfinder tests (Scouts C. Vinyent, R. Vincent, H. Gower,. 'K. Jenkins, and F. Bluett). Two Scout® (Gower and Townsend) had passed the cook’s test. A church parade was held' last*' Sunday at the Salvation Army Hall. The first cricket practise was held last Saturday. Examiners wete required for the following: Pioneers., surveyors, master at arms, and basketmaking. The report- was received, and the recommendations were approved, and examiners were reported as requested. The chairman said that- he was phased to note in the minutes of the Dominion executive meeting that -sanction had been given to hold a 'North Island West Coast->ia,mboree at Hawera. in Januarv of 1927.
