B. AND F. BIBLE SOCIETY.
HAWERA. BRANCH
There was a good attendance at a drawing-room afternoon given to collectors and sympathisers of the British and Foreign Bible Society by Mrs. J. F. Pease at her residence last week.
The Taranaki organiser, Miss M. A. Bates, in an address, referred to the first publication of the Bible in 1770 and the subsequent activities of the society. She said that owing to the cost the poor were unable to' buy the earlier editions, and after the great spiritual revival of 1791 a meeting was held in 1804, when the society was founded. The. activities were rapidly extended to include Greenland, Canada, South Sea Islands, India, China, and many other foreign. countries. To date the society had sent out 320,000.000 copies of the Scriptures, and had printed and: published at least one hook of the l Bible in 643 different languages. There were depots of the society in nearly 100 of the principal cities of the woi'ld. The election of officers was postponed until Thursday afternoon next, when the Dominion secretary, the Rev. David Colder, will address- a meeting. A considerable amount of enthusiasm 1 was displayed, and it was decided to commence collection at an early date.
