The Avondale Jockey Club was favoured with excellent weather for the opening day of their spring meeting, which eventuated at Ellerslie to-day. Consequent on a spell of good weather, the race track was in fine order. Ihe attendance was very large, as reflected in the big totalisator turnover. Beacon Lio-ht never looked like benig beaten in”the running of tb© Cup, and in Cimaline Mr Stead has a fine two-year-°ld‘ ANTRIM BOY’S SURPRISE. Claras (£3995) was a good favourite for the Maiden Plate Krug Arali (£2429) also had a good big following, but nothing else carried four figures. Bahama began best, and, up the back stretch was closely attended hy Annagour, Antrim Bov and Fair Abbey. At the four-furlong post, Antrim Boy took charge, and he led into the straight from Bahama and Tinokoa.. In the run to the judge Antrim Boy ran on well, and won very easily from Bahama, which only heat Tinokoa and the fastfinishing King Emerald. Clams was neX ‘UNSATISFACTORY TRIAL.

All acceptors for the Grey Lynn Hurdles went to the post and of them 'Zircon (£3100) had the best following 'on the tote, from King’s Guard and Sir Roseberry. From the wprd go Pendaris rushed away and had ,a lead of si dozen lengths- when he fell. Z-ncon then took charge from Karamu, Mia Bella and Glenotus. At the stand the order had undergone little alteration, but racing up the hack. King is. Gtiafd went up fast. Moving well during the 'final stages, he Von nicely from Glenotus. Miahgaloire was a poor third, ‘and was followed iby liueullent, Zircon 'and Flowing Bowl. The race Was unsatisfactory, as .Mia Bella, Pendavis and Karamu fell. Zircon s bridle gave trouble 'and Sir Roseberry bled and Was pulled up. HALF A HEAD.

Of the large field -that contested the Welter Handicap, Imitation- (£3189) 'counted on most supporters, the bracketted pair, King Lu and Queen Arch being second favourites and .Jeanette next. A good start was jefleeted, the first to show out being King Lu, Imitation, Master O’Rtorke and Ohrneimuri At the end of a furlong Day Guard had taken the lead and turned for home in front of Bright Knight, ’lmitation, Stir Archie, Gala Day and Jeanette. Up the straight bar Archie 'challenged, but his rider lost his whip Wid Day Guard beat him by a neck. Imitation was a good third, followed by 'Archibald, Bright Knight and Gala I)ay ’ CUP TO 1 THE FAVOURITE.

Mint Leaf was the only defection 'from the' Cup. and of the runners Beacon light (£5000) was a big farourite(being followed in »uhe petting; by Lomint (£2925), Mask (£2700), and Nippy. When the barrier rose Beacon Light and Invitation went to the front :a,nd ipaisising the istand were iaitten.de d (by Civility, and Sleepy Sol, with Lord ’Star and .Lomint next and Mask and Passionate, the last pair. There was little alteration in the leading positions! till six furlongs from home, where Sleepy Sol joined Beacon Bight in the lead Dfosert Glow was next, then Tanadees and Civility. Racing into the straight Beacon Light drew out and was going easily in front till Tan■adees came /at him! with a late run. Responding welt to his rider’s call, Beacon Light beat Tanadees by nearly ia length. Then, very close up, came ’Lord Star .amid Nippy, followed by Town -Bank land Desert Glow. STAKES TO- CIMALINE. A niees lot of youngsters went to the post for the Avondale Stakes, Frenzied Finance being a very big favourite. But she failed to jump out we'll. Beginning well, Cimaline (Stead’s) led Carinthia, Paganeili, High. Finance, and Abbey Dale over- the early stages. Racing into the straight, Cimaline had a useful lead over High Finance, Paganeili, and Frenzied Finance, and, galloping freely, Cimaline won very easily from High Finance, with Laughing Prince, and Paganeili next, followed by Merry Mint and Frenzied Finance. SOLID INVESTMENTS. The Flying Stakes produced a fine betting race, Hoarari (£2541), Father O’Flynn (£2446), York Abbey, Kingfield, and Le Ohoucas all coming into the market. When the barrier rose, Chairman and Tea Bell began best from York Abbey and Father O’Flynn. At tli© lialf-mile post Tea Bell and Chairman were still the leaders, and the pair were just in front of Nancy Lee, Hoariri, and Pavo at the home turn. Once in a line for the judge, Pavo challenged and Chairman went back. With, a hundred yards to go, Le Choucas came fast, and, passing Pavo and Tea Bell, won by three parts of a length from his stable mate, Tea Bell, with Pavo, Chairman, and Phabla next. MAIDEN PERFORMANCE. Of seventeen runners for the Henderson Handicap, Eden Hall (£4300) was a pronounced favourite, .while Barometer, Te Monanui, and High Pitch each had solid support. Arch Arrow, Nainutere, High Pitch and Te Moanui all began well and were well placed over the.first stage of ithe race. At the (half-mile post, High Pitch was just in front o_£ Arch Arrow, Muscari and Te Monanui. Racing into the straight, i High Pitch was clear of his opponents, but Te Monanui then threw out a challenge, but the maiden performer ran on well to beat Te Mpnianui by a eouplo of lengths, with Mosaic, True Blood and Eden Hall following and all close up. PUBLIC CHOICE JUSTIFIED. A pleasant clay concluded with the Swanson Hack, and of the big field bettors made Chamour the prime fancy, ho carrying in'ore than twice as much as Kilperon and Cohesion, -which pair were next in order as favourites. Jumping out smartly, Kilperon loci up the back from Killutc and Royal Form. The last-named joined Kilperon at the halfmile post, and they were just in front of Value and Ohaanour racing into the straight. In a line for the finish, Kilperon looked like winning, but Chamour finished remarkably well to beat him by a neck, with Wiltshire and .Value also close up.
